Organizations Hold Key to Active Sporting Scene in Israel

TEL AVIV — The Israelis
definitely are a sports-
loving people. Although the
state claims a population of
only 3.5 million, the wide
arc of sports participation
that Israelis indulge in
ranges from basketball to
bowls, rugby to rowing, sail-
ing to skiing, and a mul-
titude of other sports in be-
tween these areas.
The top sports associa-
tions in Israel include: The
Olympic Committee of Is-
rael, a successor to the
Palestine Olympic Commit-
, established in 1933.
s committee is directly
responsible for Israel's
delegations to Olympic
Games and to regional con-
tests. In addition, the
Olympic Committee assists
in the construction of sports
facilities and gives spe-
cialized training to talented
youngsters all over the -
country. It operates a schol-
arship fund for this purpose.
The Israel Sports Fed-
eration, founded in 1931
and broken down into 16
different sports groups
which include boxing,
cycling, fencing, gymnas-
tics, handball, judo, row-
ing, sailing, shooting,
swimming, table tennis,
track and field, vol-
leyball, water polo,
weightlifting and wrestl-
ing.
There seems to be an
argument in Israel, as to
which is the number one
type of athletics partici-
pated in by the citizens.
There are followers of soccer
who claim it is number one,

National Psyches
Affected 2 Raids

TEL AVIV (ZINS) —
American psychiatrist Dr.
Daniel Lunde says the Is-
raelis succeeded at Entebbe
in 1976 and the Americans
failed in their hostage re-
scue effort in Iran this year
partly because of the differ-
ent national psyches of the
two countries.
He said Israel feels cut-off
from the rest of the world
and her soldiers have a
"do-or-die" attitude. Ameri-
cans are much more cau-
tious, he said. .
"These kinds of opera-
tions require a daring, de-
sperado quality that is not
part of the American per-
sonality today," said Dr.
Lunde.

and in recent years the
game of basketball, origi-
nally introduced to Israel by
the incomparable Nat Hol-
man, has its advocates.
The Football Association
(soccer) here, was founded
in 1928 and is affiliated
with the FIFA, the interna-
tional body, world-wide.
The local association is a
parent body over football, as
it is referred to here, with
30,000 players registered.
On the other hand, the Is-
rael Basketball Associa-
tion, which became inde-
pendent in 1968 and is affil-
iated with FIBA embraces
20,000 plus registered con-
testants.
Perhaps the fastest
growing sport here is
tennis and it's safe, to say
that by the end of the
calendar year more than
20,000 people will be par-
ticipating in this particu-
lar sport. The Tennis
Association was founded
in 1946 and is responsible
for arranging the coun-
try's regular participa-
tion in the Davis Cup.
This administrative pro-
cedure has existed since
1949.
There are some 20 other
associations which operate
independently for athletics,
golf, cricket, rugby, skiing,
etc.
In Israel, there are five
major sports organizations
which are responsible for
fielding teams and organi-
zing clubs so that
Y can get active in
the various sports on a na-
tional and international
level.
The largest club organ-
ization is Hapoel, which is
the sports body of the His-
tadrut, the labor federation.
It was founded in 1926 and
currently has a membership
of over 130,000 who make
up the 1,180 Histadrut
clubs around the country.
Hapoel is active in 21 sepa-
rate sports venues.
Maccabi is the coun-
try's oldest sports organ-
ization, having been
active also in sports. It
claims a membership of
2,400 athletes in 48 clubs
with activity confined to
eight sports. The top
sport for Betar is boxing.
A group founded in 1953,

the Academic Sports Asso-
ciation (ASA) has repre-
sented Israel in the Interna-
tional Academic Sports
Association ever since then.
There are 10 universities

and institutions of higher
learning affiliated with
ASA.
The Sport and Physical
Education Authority of the
Ministry of Education is the

major government agency
of sports in Israel. It fi-
nances the training of pro
fessional manpower and
teachers, the construction of
sports facilities, aids sports

associations and organiza-
tions, municipal and local
authorities in their sport ac
tivities and coordinates be-
tween them and other gov-
ernment bodies.
