Strength Seen in Jewish Giving

By BORIS SMOLAR

(Editor-in-chief emeritus, JTA)
(Copyright 1980, JTA, Inc.)

The tradition of giving to
the United Jewish Appeal
has become rooted in
American' Jewish life. For
many, it represents their
Jewish identity. To the
non-religious it represents a
Jewish conscience. There
are about 1,000,000 con-
tributors to the UJA today,
mostly heads of families.
Their number continues to
grow with every year.

Some American Jewish
sociologists are pessimistic
about the future of Jewish
giving. They predict an in-
evitable decline in contribu-
tions to Jewish philan-
thropic causes. However,
these prophets of gloom
build their predictions
merely on assumptions. The
facts tell a different story —
a story of steady growth and
expansion of the United
Jewish Appeal and of the
Jewish federation's which

are the financial backbone
of the UJA and of Jewish
communal life in this coun-
try.
During the last 10 years
the UJA campaigns
realized more than the total
of all 31 previous cam-
paigns. The 1980 campaign
is now moving forcefully to
surpass the $500 million
plateau, and is only the be-
ginning of a movement
toward higher levels.
It is expected that this
year's campaign will
bring $520 million, which
is 25 percent more than
the previous year. And
for 1981, a three-day na-
tional conference of
Jewish leaders held last
month set a goal of $635
million which is about 22
percent higher than 1980.
What the pessimistic
sociologists seem to undere-
stimate in their predictions
is the zeal of the "young
leadership" in the UJA.
They consider the younger
elements of American
Jewry apathetic to Jewish
giving.
This assumption is re-
jected by the fact that the
UJA has today an "army" of
about 20,000 energetic and
deeply dedicated young men
under 40 who are organized
into a Young Leadership
body, with their own
cabinet and their own sup-
portive programs.

NEW YORK (JTA) —
Some 700 people gathered
last week at the Young Is-
rael of Flatbush to com-
memorate Zvi Glatt, a
young man from the com-
munity who was killed in a
Palestine Liberation
Organization attack in
Hebron May 2.
The memorial, held at the
end of the traditional
30-day mourning period, in-
cluded many speakers from
the area who priased Glatt's
commitment to bringing
Jews closer together.
Two local rabbis, Max
Schreier and Herbert
Bomzer, criticized the Car-
ter Administration which,
they charged, attempted to
cover up for the terrorists by
denying that U.S. citizens
were killed or wounded in
the raid.

ROME (JTA) — The Ita-
lian Supreme Court is ex-
pected to schedule hearings
shortly to determine
whether the so-called
"mini-concordat" of 1930
which requires all members
of the organized Jewish
community to pay taxes to
the community in addition
to their municipal and fed-
eral taxes is constitutional.
The issue was brought to
the courts by Jewish citi-
zens of Leghorn involved in
a dispute with the Jewish
community there and by a
Jewish immigrant from
Libya who refuses to pay his
taxes to the Rome Jewish
community and refuses to
withdraw from it.

Those speaking of a de-
cline. in Jewish giving in the
future are also forgetting
the growing involvement of
women in the UJA cam-
paigns. This involvement is
now becoming a major fac-
tor in the campaigns.
Women are beginning
to take major leadership
positions in the com-
munities and to exert
influence. They express
themselves apart from
their husbands. Last
year, the president of the
Los Angeles Federation
was a woman. This year,
the president of the New
York Federation is a
woman.
The chairperson of the
San Francisco campaign is a
woman. In Boston, Houston
and other cities women
chair the community cam-
paigns. This is a_ new de-
velopment which spells in
creased strength for the
UJA and the federations.

Discontent is the want of
self-reliance; it is infirmity
of will.
— Emerson
