Zats, a construction engineer from Chernovtsy, received a three-year sen- tence. Zats, his wife, two children and mother-in-law received exit visas to Israel at the end of 1979. At the last moment, Zats' visa was confiscated and old charges, which were officially drop- ped in October 1977, were brought up again. At that time, the local procurator, after a lengthy nine-month investigation, had decided that there was no case against Zats and all charges against him were dropped. The authorities reopened the case when he applied to go to Israel in Oc- tober 1979. Rosenberg, from Tash- kent, charged with brib- ing a Soviet official to ob- tain an exit visa to Israel, was given five years im- prisonment and confisca- tion of property. Rosenberg and his wife applied to emigrate to Israel in 1979 to reunite with their two daughters there. Rosenberg was charged With Article 153/2 of the Uzbeck Criminal Code on Dec. 31, 1979, at which time all the family's property was confiscated. The trial in May 1980 was held behind closed doors. The third Jew, Biletsky, was sentenced to eight years in prison on similar charges of bribery. Meanwhile, 24 members of Congress sent cables to Soviet President Leonid Brezhnev on behalf of two Jews who may be executed for "economic crimes," ac- cording to the National Conference on Soviet Jewry (NCSJ). Rafael Adzhiashvill, 49, from Tblisi, and Mamed Abasov from Baku, were sentenced to death in August 1978, for the al- leged stealing of factory surplus textile for resale. In Chicago, Alexander Slepak, a Soviet Jew whose parents are exiled in Siberia, urged continued pressure on the USSR for free Jewish emigration in order to "stop the next Holocaust." In Albany, N.Y. former ' Soviet dissident Alexander Ginzburg reminded the New York State legislators that 10 years after the Leningrad hijacking trials in the Soviet Union, there are still three men impris- oned for the "crime." Toronto Temple Appoints Woman TORONTO (JTA) — Joan Friedman, 27, of Marblehead, Mass., has been appointed assistant rabbi of Toronto's Holy Blossom Temple, the first woman rabbi in Canada. She was ordained June 1 in New York City at the He- brew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion. Yuri Federov and Alexei Murzhenko, two of the three men still being held for the alleged at- tempt to hijack a plane to Israel 10 years ago, were Ginzburg's bunkmates in a Mordovian prison camp, he said. Federov and Murzhenko acre Christians. The third prisoner, Iosif Mendelovich, a Jew, has persisted in strict obser- vance of Jewish law at the camp, despite additional hardship and suffering im- posed on him, according to reports. Germany Turn Down Ban on Japanese Toys BONN (JTA) — Federal authorities have decided not to ban Japanese-made toys bearing Nazi symbols or mimicking the weapons used by the German army and. the SS during World War II. The importer, a Nurem- burg firm, promised for its part, to stop distributing the toys which have been sold in stores throughout West Germany, although, accord- ing to the authorities, not in great quantities. The decision by the authority responsible for controlling dangerous toys came after nine months of litigation initiated by the youth department of the town of Bielefeld. WATCH.
