Hawaii Adopts Israeli Town

HONOLULU (JTA) —
The Hawaii Jewish Welfare
Fund announced that it will
"adopt" Hatzor Ha Galilit,
an immigrant township in
upper Galilee earmarked
for assistance through Proj-
ect Renewal.
To date, Hawaii has
raised approximately
$90,000 for the purpose and

the trustees of the fund have
set a goal of $250,000 dur-
ing the next five years.
Hatzor Ha Galilit has a
large population of Moroc-
can and Kurdish Jews,
many of whom still live in
makeshift housing erected
in 1953 or in houses too
small for their large
families.

It was the second time in
three weeks that arsonists
had attempted to burn the
building. During the night
of May 7-8, gasoline was
poured on and under a rear
door and ignited. Damage
estimate in that fire was
$6,000-$7,000.
The arson squad of the
Southfield fire department
is investigating the two
blazes. Inspector William
Barber said the Alcohol,
Tobacco and Firearms Di-
vision of the Federal
Bureau of Investigation has
also been asked to investi-
gate because of the political
nature of the Zionist Organ-
ization of America-Detroit
District (ZOD), which owns
the building.
Inspector Barber yid the
investigators have no leads
in the case.
Hymie Cutler of the
ZOD speculated that
Palestine Liberation
Organization sympathiz-
ers in the Detroit area are
responsible for the two
fires. He said the ZOD has
been very active in recent
months distributing lit-
erature to churches, high
schools and colleges ex-
posing the terrorist ac-
tivities of the PLO.

"Some of that material
may have reached • the
hands of PLO sympathiz-
ers," Cutler said.
The May 29 fire was
started after 12:30 a.m.

Janitors left the building at
that time following a Bnai
Brith meeting. A ZOD sec-
retary discovered smoke
and the smoldering fire
when she opened the build-
ing - in the morning.
Sidney
Silverman,
president of the ZOD, said
repairs and painting were
completed in time for the
organization to hold its
scheduled election meeting
in the building last night.
He said the ZOD is dis-
cussing alarm systems,
guard service and other
measures to increase secu-
rity at the building.
