THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Israel's Shaare Zedek Hospital Recruits Supporters at Dinner Honoring Cohodas Scores of supporters for medical and health pro- grams at Jerusalem's Shaare Zedek Hospital were enrolled at the annual dinner of Detroit Friends of Shaare Zedek Hospital, at the Southfield Sheraton, last week. The annual function hon- ored Sam Cohodas of 'shpeming, Northern IVIichigan Jewish leader, "for his many contributions and services in important Jewish and Israel causes and his involvement in civic movements and university projects." .Dr. David Maeir, director-general of the Jerusalem hospital, in a de- finitive address, which was followed by a presentation to Cohodas, described the pioneering projects intro- duced and pursued at the 100-year-old health center. He pointed out that the hospital, when first or- ganized nearly 100 years ago in a shabby shanty, was on ground measur- ing 6,000 square meters of land. Now it is on ground measuring 120,000 square meters. Shaare Zedek Hosptial, Dr. Maeir pointed out, pioneered in geriatrics. Shaare Zedek Hospital's "humanism in medical treatments" has its impact on the entire country, Dr. Maeir said in his review of the achievements and growth of the institution of which he is now the third director-general in its cen- tury of services in Jerusalem. Dr. Maeir presented to the honoree a citation im- posed on Jerusalem stone taken from the foundation that was dug for the Shaare Zedek Hospital. Cohodas, in his re- sponse, gave an impres- sive account of services rendered under his lead; ership in Northern Michigan for Israel, especially the Hebrew University, to Boys Town in Jerusalem and numer- ous other agencies and causes. Cohodas rates high as the third largest produce dis- tributing industrialist in Michigan. Guests at the event in- cluded his niece and nephew, William and Lois Cohodas of Ishpeming. Rabbi Joshua Sperka, president of Detroit Friends of Shaare Zedek Hospital, greeted the gathering and presented citations to Emma Schaver "for aid in establishing the dialysis workshop at the hospital," and to Doris Rosenbaum who, with her husband Ely, provided support for the hospital's student apart- ments. Max Nosanchuk, dinner chairman, presided at the event which drew an audience of more than 400. Initiat- ing the appeal iip support of the Jerusalem hospi- tal, Nosanchuk pointed out that when the hospi- tal began it served com- munities numbering less than 100,000.
