Israel's Shaare Zedek Hospital Recruits
Supporters at Dinner Honoring Cohodas

Scores of supporters for
medical and health pro-
grams at Jerusalem's
Shaare Zedek Hospital were
enrolled at the annual
dinner of Detroit Friends
of Shaare Zedek Hospital, at
the Southfield Sheraton,
last week.
The annual function hon-
ored Sam Cohodas of
'shpeming, Northern
IVIichigan Jewish leader,
"for his many contributions
and services in important
Jewish and Israel causes
and his involvement in civic
movements and university
projects."
.Dr.
David
Maeir,
director-general of the

Jerusalem hospital, in a de-
finitive address, which was
followed by a presentation
to Cohodas, described the
pioneering projects intro-
duced and pursued at the
100-year-old health center.
He pointed out that the
hospital, when first or-
ganized nearly 100 years
ago in a shabby shanty,
was on ground measur-
ing 6,000 square meters of
land. Now it is on ground
measuring 120,000
square meters.
Shaare Zedek Hosptial,
Dr. Maeir pointed out,
pioneered in geriatrics.
Now, among the new
methods of treating

Sam Cohodas, left, is shown receiving a founder's
stone from Shaare Zedek Hospital of Jerusalem at the
Detroit Friends of Shaare Zedek's annual dinner last
week. Shown with Cohodas are dinner chairman Max
Nosanchuk and Dr. David Maeir, director general of
the hospital.

Shaare Zedek Hospital's
"humanism in medical

on the entire country, Dr.
Maeir said in his review of
the achievements and

especially the Hebrew

ous other agencies and
causes.
Cohodas rates high as the
third largest produce dis-
tributing industrialist in
Michigan.
Guests at the event in-
cluded his niece and
nephew, William and Lois
Cohodas of Ishpeming.
Rabbi Joshua Sperka,
president of Detroit Friends
of Shaare Zedek Hospital,
greeted the gathering and
presented citations to
Emma Schaver "for aid in
establishing the dialysis
workshop at the hospital,"
and to Doris Rosenbaum
who, with her husband Ely,
provided support for the
hospital's student apart-
ments.
Max
Nosanchuk,
dinner
chairman,
presided at the event
which drew an audience
of more than 400. Initiat-
