Moreover, com- mon menu descriptions such as 'homemade' and `kosher' should be re- placed with more accu- rate terms like 'homes- tyle' and 'kosher style.' ... (the latter an excep- tion in Michigan where such wordage is against state law.) • Method of Preserva- tion — Frozen or canned vegetables and juices should never be described as `fresh' because 'fresh' means that it is not preserved in any fashion. When a patron orders a 'fresh fruit salad,' the expectation is for all fresh fruits and not a com- bination of fresh, frozen, canned or chilled.' ". Food Preparation — It is clear misrepresentation to describe a menu item as `broiled' when it is, in fact, fried or sauteed. Moreover, `since many people are al- lergic to, or attempting to avoid, particular methods of food preparation,' restau- rant operators 'should not only be accurate in the menu description, but food prepared in a special way (such as charcoal broiled, barbequed, smoked or deep fried) should also be in- cluded in the description.' t• Dietary or Nutritional Claims — Menu misrep- resentations concerning a food's sugar or salt content are not only deceptive, but can pose a 'health hazard to those people who are under special dietary restrictions.' In addition, descriptionS such as low calorie' and other nutritional claims `should not be made unless they can be supported.' ". Verbal and Visual Presentation — 'A con- sumer looking at a pic- ture on the menu, wall poster, or any other form of advertising expects to be served a meal' similar to the one depicted. Simi- larly, 'imitation sour cream or bacon bits should not he served when consumers are asked if they want sour cream or bacon pieces for their baked.potato, nor should domestic blue cheese be used when the consumer orders a Roquefort cheese salad dressing.' .• Brand Names — Trademarks for food items should not be used generi- cally, and 'any brand or trademark product that is advertised should be the one served.' • Point of Origin — Res- taurant patrons may choose a food because it comes from a particular geographic area (Winconsin cheese, Idaho potatoes, Maine lobsters, Florida orange juice, Virginia ham, Roma- nian pastrami, Maryland crabmeat, Dover sole, etc.). Since this 'point of origin depicts unique char- acteristics that. the con- sumer expects when order- ing the food,' these descrip- tions should always be Ct RESTAURANT-LOUNGE 29505 W. 9 MILE RD., SW Corner Middlebelt474-4650 WHOLE SLAB OF RIBS SUNDAY, MONDAY & TUESDAY $ 650 Includes Cole Slaw, Cottage Fries and Garlic Bread Your Host: Mike Watzman e/i4 eee. "If you're on an economy kick, you can still eat out and enjoy it without shel- ling out a bundle. At Sila's on 12 Mile just east of Greenfield, a medium an- tipasto salad for two is more than enough and the price is right. In fact, if you're brown bagging it for lunch these days, your friendly Si- la's waitress will cheerfully put the leftovers of the more than ample salad in a carton and it stays fresh for at least two noon meals; That's Ita- lian. "Beau Jack's on Tele- graph and Maple serves juicy hamburgers any way you like them and you won't stop smiling when the bill comes. The dining room is attractive and decorated with warm, good taste. "In the same area is Ho- gan's Family Tavern, once a Howard Johnson, with posters, a funhouse decor and a reasonable menu for couples and families. Spe- cialties are ground rounds, just plain or with double cheese, Canadian bacon or sauteed' mushrooms and on- ions, Gazpacho soup and quiche and ice cream cocktails.
