SAT. 10 to 6 p.m. THURS. FRI. 10 to 9 p.m. SUN 12 to 5 p.m. Editor, The Jewish News: My compliments on a very enjoyable story about that remarkable woman, Marta (Mrs. Leon) Feuchtwanger, in last week's issue. Another incident is worthy of mention in con- nection with her efforts to help her husband escape from the Nazi internment camp in southern France. You mentioned the help they both were given by the U.S. officials in Marseilles; but it (the escape) was actu- ally accomplished because, - of the interest that — President and Mrs-. Roosevelt took in their case. The name Feuchtwanger, translated into English, means "wet cheek." The author wrote his book using the pen name "J.L. Wetch- eek." With this information President Roosevelt ordered a temporary visa to be is- sued to "L. Wetcheek" — an action permissable only through the direct interven- tion of the President . . . and that's how they left France and came to America. Lothar Kahn, the Feuchtwanger biographer, wrote, In 1940, both occup- ants of the White House kept insisting on the issuing of emergency visas, overrul- ing the narrowly bureauc- ratic refusals of career dip- - lomats, many of whom were anti-Semitic." Leonard N. Simons and culture department of the World Zionist Organiza- tion. Winners of the national contest are rewarded with a trip to Israel to compete with other day school stu- dents from all over the world on Israel Indepen- dence Day. * * * BETH ACHIM junior congregation (age 8-12) will meet 10 a.m. Saturday in the Klein Chapel for serv- ices.
