THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS

The most ancient trees in
Israel are thought to be in
the olive grove of the Gar-
den of Gethsemane, at the

Mount of Olives in

another "mitzva" in a
lifetime of services to the
synagogue and the commu-
nity.
The Jan Peerce concert,
therefore, emerges as a tes-
timonial to the couple and
its family on the eve of Mr.
Weisberg's 90th birthday to
be celebrated in December.
Peter and Clara Weis-
berg, together with their
children and grandchildren,
have been long-time mem-
bers of Cong. Shaarey
Zedek.
The Allied Jewish
Campaign, Israel Bonds,
Zionist Organization of
Detroit, Bnai Brith, Hillel
Day School, Bar-Ilan
University and Yeshiva
University have been
among the recipients of
the Wesibergs' consistent
support. The Jewish
Theological Seminary
has created the Peter and
Clara Weisberg Schol-
arship at its rabbinical

school.
Weisberg is chairman of 10
the Shaarey Zedek daily
minyan committee.
-4
In 1974, the Weisbergs
were recipients of the
"Sword of the Hagana" on
behalf of the state of Israel.
Chairman of the board
and founder of Chatham
Super Markets, Weisberg
came to the United States in
1912, at age 21. He first set-
tled in Pittsburgh with rela-
tives who owned a grorc.ry
store. He began his biu
career in Detroit in 192..1E-
1974, he was chosen "man of
the year" by Associated
Food Dealers.
In 1947, Weisberg pur-
chased the Chatham Vil-
lage Market — the forerun-
ner of the company as- it is
known today. From that
first market Chatham
Super Markets, Inc., has
grown to 43 stores, a meat
plant and two distribution
centers.
