WASHINGTON — A
novel approach in the
treatment of emotionally
disturbed boys has contrib-
uted to the 65 percent re-
covery rate at the Bnai
Brith Women Children's
Home in Israel, according to
Chezzie Cohen, the home's
director.
Cohen does not adminis-
ter drugs to any of the resi-
dents, who often stay at the
home three to four times
longer than they do at most
similar institutions in the
United States. The home's

recovery rate is more than
double that of many of its
American counterparts.
Cohen feels that the use of
drugs too often substitutes
for genuine care on behalf of
the staff. "Whenever drugs
are used," he said, "it is at
the expense of human in-
tervention. When a child-
care worker has to think of
giving medicine to a child,
he stops thinking of show-
ing love to him."
Because residents often
stay at the home for five or
six years, staff members are

urged to make a minimum
five-year commitment to
working there. This enables
the staff to develop strong
bonds with the boys at the
home and protects them
from the additional trauma
of interrupted relation-
ships.

A recent article in the
Journal of the American
Academy of Child Psychia-
try praised Cohen's efforts
and his techniques are now
being applied in several
Western institutions.

Yanowicz Chair

NEW YORK — Anny and
Paul Yanowicz of New York
City have donated a chair in
human rights to Tel Aviv
University.
Yanowicz was born in
Kiev, Russia, and came to
Palestine as a youngster.
He served with the Hagana
in the 1930s and spent
World War II in the British
Army's Royal Artillery, an
experience that served him
later when he became one of
the first officers of the ne- -
Israeli army's artillek
corps during the War of In-
dependence. After the war,
he held senior positions
with the Israel Defense
Forces, the last of which was
with the Quartermaster

Yanowicz was the master
organizer behind many
presitigious events held in
Israel during the 1950s,

Mrs. Yanowicz was born

the area and came to Pales-
tine as a young woman. She
was one of the Israel De-
fense Forces' first woman
officers.

Divorce Granted
Without Husband

PHILADELPHIA — A
Reconstructionist rabbini-
cal court has granted a
woman a divorce without
the consent of her husband.
The woman's husband
had not agreed to a Jewish
divorce following their civil
divorce. A Jewish divorce is
required for the woman t
remarry Jewishly.
Orthodox Jews do not rec-
ognize divorces that are
granted without the hus
band's consent. Some Con-
servative rabbis grant an
annulment to the woman
when the husband refuses
to go through the Jewish di-
vorce procedure.
