Begin and his government. He specifically accused Begin, in a Xnesset speech, of distorting his proposals for Palestinian autonomy to make it appear that Dayan advocated a weakening of Israel's security in the occu- pied territories. Dayan, who defected from the Labor Party in 1977 and joined. He retained his Knesset seat as an indepen- dent MK. Unlike Defense Minister Ezer Weizman, who resigned last week with a bitter attack on Begin's policies, Dayan departed quietly and had little to say in public about the govern- ment's performance. But Wednesday his speech was fierce in tone and scathingly critical of the prime minister. Dayan was incensed by Begin's speech to the Knesset Tuesday in which he claimed, among other things, that his former foreign minister wanted Israel to with- draw unilaterally from the West Bank and leave security matters to local Arabs. "How dare he (Begin) put such words into my mouth, things I never said," Dayan de- clared. He said that Begin had distorted, for the sake of argument, proposals Dayan had made regarding the West Bank. Dayan said he had never suggested that a new target date for the au- tonomy talks with Egypt be set after the American Presidential elections. He said that when he called for the dismantling of the mili- tary government on the West Bank he did not mean the withdrawal of Israeli Defense Forces, as Begin had implied. NEW YORK (JTA) — Soviet President Leonid Brezhnev has rejected an appeal for clemency by two Jews sentenced to death in August 1978 for "economic crimes," following a year- long trial in the town of Donetsk in the Ukraine, ac- cording to the National Conference on Soviet Jewry (NCSJ). Raphael Adzhiashvill, 49, from Tblisi, married with three children, and a man named Abasov from Baku, went on trial with 52 co- defendants for allegedly stealing factory surplus tex- tile for resale, All but eight of the defendants were . Jewish. Although the prosecutor asked for sentences of 10-15 years for all' of the defen- dants, four Jews received death sentences. After ap- pealing to the Supreme Soviet of the USSR, two of the four condemned Jews — Gabriel Seplashvill and Ilya Mikhalshvill — had their sentences commuted to 15 years in jail.
