An October, 1942 Playgoer beckoned theater-goers to give a dinner party at the Clam Shop on E. Grand Boulevard _to put everyone in a receptive mood for a play at the Cass. The Clam Shop promised good clam chowder and seafoods at their best. And that was evidenced by Cadillacs and old clunkers alike driving up to the restau- rant. The atmosphere left much to be desired, but the seafood was among the greatest. Wonder why the Clam Shop didn't make it when it moved into the former, exotic Mauna Loa Restaurant which didn't make it either despite its elegant decor? A new show was starting at the Club Three 666's downtown. The show, was called The West Indian Dippy-Dip Review" starring the Calypso Kids. Summer's, at the sign of the windmill on Lafayette and Shelby, was advertising a daily supper of roast young turkey, dressing, cranberry sauce, potatoes, roll and butter for 34 cents. The restaurant was even air-conditioned. A BAR MITZVAH OR BAS MITZVAH You WILL BE PROUD OF Latin music was the craze and the Book Casino's Copacabana Revue was pleasing patrons with the Samba Sirens, Afro-Cuban and Brazilian songs and folk dances. A 1940s Theatergoer from the Shubert Lafayette Theater advertized three Brass Rails at Twenty West Adams, Michigan at Gris- wold and 6545 Woodward. They boasted the longest bars in Michigan with qual- ity food, the finest liquors and entertainment. The Penobscot Club at the Fort Street entrance of the Penobscot Bldg. downtown was billed as the gay, new restaurant in the sky with superb food and music by Don King. Robert Lace Was the host. After the theater, the play bill ad said, the stage is at Sammy Sofferin's Won- der Bar, on Washington Boulevard at State, famous coast-to-coast. I wonder what hap- pened to those good old seafood places where you could stuff yourself with shore dinners from the sea plus fried chicken and corn on the cob? Many of us have fond memories of Hedge's Wig- wam on Woodward, the Gold Cup Room in the Whit- tier Hotel, Club Royale where you could gamble, the elegant Latin Quarter.
