NEW YORK (JTA) —
The Jewish community in
Ufuguay, an estimated
45,000 among a population
of three million, is con--
cerned over a sharp increase
in anti-Semitism this past
year, according to American
Jewish Committee.
Attacks on synagogues,
Jewish organizations and
Jewish students have been
growing in number, and dis-
tribution of anti-Semitic
literature has become the
more widespread.
Books such as the anti-
Semitic "The Protocols of
the Elders of Zion," are
available in editions coming
from Spain and Mexico and
Argentina, too, though such
volumes are now forbidden
in the latter country be-
cause of their racist char-
acter. In Montevideo,

Uruguay's capital, there is a
bookstand that specializes
in anti-Semitic material.
The Jewish Central
Committee in Uruguay has
asked top-level authorities
to denounce this state of af-
fairs. There was a promise
from the Ministers of Jus-
tice and of Foreign Affairs
that a law would be passed
under which propaganda
inciting racial discrimina-
tion would be severely
punished. More than a year
has elapsed since that prom-
ise was made, but no such
law has yet been passed, the
AJCommittee reported.

Some Uruguayan news-
papers reported that the
government was not acting
because officials felt adop-
tion of such a law would im-
plicitly acknowledge the

MDA Slomovitz Scholarship
Will Train New Paramedics

NEW YORK — The es-
tablishment of a Magen
David Adorn (MDA)
Paramedic Training Schol-
arship in Israel, in honor of
Anna and Philip Slomovitz
of Detroit, has been• an-
nounced by Dr. John. J.
Mames, president of the
Michigan Region of Ameri-
can Red Magen David for Is-
rael (ARMDI). The
Slomovitz MDA Paramedic
Scholarship has been set up
by the Michigan Region "in
recognition of the magnifi-
cent support rendered to
MDA, Israel's Red Cross
Society, by Mr. and Mrs.
Slomovitz."
Magen -David Adorn is
now training_a corps of skil-
led paramedics to man the
sophisticated mobile car-
diac rescue ambulances
used to save the lives of
heart attack and accident
trauma_victims, as well as
the critically ill. -
These medical profes-
sionals will be qualified to
render on site emergency
aid, accurately assess the
patient's medical situation
and discuss prognosis and
treatment by telemetry and
radio with doctors in local
hospitals-. In effect, the am-
bulance is an intensive care
unit on wheels.
To enable Magen David
Adorn to train Israelis for
this new profession, spe-
cial scholarships, of
_which the Slomovitz
Scholarship is one of the
first, are being estab-
lished by friends of

ARMDI.
In announcing the
Slomovitz Scholarship, Dr.
Mames paid tribute "to the
many years of devoted serv-
ice given to MDA by Mr. and
Mrs. Slomovitz who were
among the Founders of the
Detroit Chapter of ARMDI.
They have been an inspira-
tion to the Detroit Chapter
and the entire Jewish com-
munity" said Dr. Mames,
"and we feel it only fitting
that their names should
now be associated with the
institution of a new profes-
sion to save more precious
Israeli lives."

Jewish Tour
of Scandanavia

"We need to change the
legal status of the settle-
ments so that we can ex-
propriate private land for
them," Sharon said.

NEW YORK — Tourists
interested in Jewish life in
Scandanavian countries
can embark on the Jewish
Experience Tour of Scan-
danavia this summer.
New York Rabbi Fred-
erick E. Werbell, a native of
Sweden and organizer of the
tour, reports that his groups
• are cordially received by the
local Jewish communities
in Finland, Denmark and
Sweden.
For information, write to
Rabbi Werbell, 405 E. 63
St., New York, N.Y. 10021.

Expropriation
Unnecessary

TEL AVIV — A Cabinet
committee has concluded
that there is enough gov-
ernment land available for
enlarging six Israeli set-
tlements in the occupied
West Bank without exprop-
riating privately owned
Arab tracts.
Agriculture Minister
Ariel Sharon, said the sup-
ply of Government land
would meet the settlements'
needs for several years.

But he was quoted by Is-
rael Radio as saying that
the use of land owned by the
Jordanian government be-
fore Israel captured the
West Bank in 1967 could
"only be seen as a tempor-
ary solution to the land
problems of Jewish settle-
ments.'_'- -
