(The Best of Everything) (Continued from Page 32) Farmington Hills, the best bet is to let the owner plan your menu and bring you the unique specialties of the house. That's a real palate tickling treat and it's fun being surprised without having to make a decision about what to order. At Novi's Ah Wok, you may enjoy the meats over crackling rice or a variety of unusual chic- ken and seafood dishes. If you have a hankering for Italian food, try Cafe Cortina on 10 Mile between Middlebelt and Orchard Lake Road. The tri-level restaurant is cozy and re- laxing with tables sur- rounding an open fireplace. Prices are reasonable to ex- pensive depending on what you order and the food is tasty. It'll make you nod your head with approval and say, "That's Italian." When you're looking for a family-style restaurant, you're in for a pleasant sur- prise at Hogan's, formerly Howard Johnson's, on Maple and Telegraph. Be sure to order an appetizer of cauliflower, mushrooms and onion rings prepared in a delicious batter and served with a tasty dip. Hamburgers and salad are a cut above many other moderately-priced restau- rants. The most expensive item on the menu is lobster with all the trimmings at $20. The dining room ad- joins a bar lounge which at- tracts the younger, swing- ing set. It's well worth it, when you're in the mood for a nice, long ride, to stop at Gus's Steak House on Lapeer north of Clarkston Road in Lake Orion. The oyster bar in this road house is a spe- cialty and so are the steaks, done just the way you like them. Another popular spot in the lake area is Mitch's Tavern on Cass Elizabeth Lake Road in Pontiac. The ribs, pizza and Greek salads are savory and the atmosphere is informal. The kids love it. Speaking of kids and fam- ily restaurants takes us back to places we fre- quented with our children when we had to chase them around and restrain them from bothering the other customers. Do you re- member Lotus Gardens on Seven Mile and Meyers in Detroit? Many a Sunday night we'd take our young ones there for a good Chinese meal and a friendly chat with Louie, the conge- nial owner who loved kids and never became im- patient with them. Then there was U.T. Gar- dens on Six Mile where the breaded veal cutlets were among the best we've ever tasted. Robinhood's, Billie's and Checker Barbeque on Livernois were other pe- rennial favorites. Many of these restaurants have long since closed their doors but they still conjure up happy memories. , 4 . Other dining spots were reserved for nights. Mothers and fathers paid baby-sitters and went out for a relaxing meal. Ciun- gan's was a name we could never spell or pronounce, but the seafood place on Southfield Road in Ecorse was one we especially enjoyed. The French-fried shrimps and lobsters were real treats at prices that we- ren't mind-boggling if our memories serve us right. The Clam Shop on E. Grand Blvd. in Detroit was 45 years old when it closed. The atmosphere wasn't the height of lux- ury, but we always knew the food would be great from the clams, crab and oysters to the lobsters, fish and steak. Driscoll's Steak House in St. Clair Shores was an- other favorite in our younger years. Steaks were juicy and delicious and the homemade coleslaw and cucumbers with sour cream were just the right touches to top off a meal. When we left the kids at our parents' homes for the night and didn't have to pay a baby-sitter by the hour, we'd sometimes take a ride to Hawaiian Gardens in Holly for Polynesian cuisine in an exotic atmosphere. Huck's Bavarian Village in Redford was a fun place for sauerbraten and wiener schnitzel, imported draft beer and German entertainment. We refer to these places in the past tense because they were a part of our (Continued on Page 34) Friday, May 23, 1' .:1 33 •••••••••••••••• • .
