Jewish loyalties, the Vaad
Harabonim, the Council of
Orthodox Rabbis, gave spe-
cial emphasis to Jerusalem
Day at its annual dinner, at
the Jewish Community
Center May 14.
More than 400 who
attended the event heard a
keynote address by the
dinner chairman, Leonard
Borman, who urged the
strengthening of the major
tasks of assuring retention
of observance of the basic
Jewish obligations, such as

kashrut. He commended the
Vaad for its consistent
labors in synagogue mat-
ters, arbitration, supervi-
sion, of divorce codes and
many related matters.
Rabbi Leizer Levin,
president of the Vaad
Harabonim, speaking in
Yiddish, gave special
emphasis to the obser-
vance of Jerusalem Day,
which occurred on the
day of the anniversary
dinner.
He spoke with pride of Is-
rael's achievements and of
the unification ofJerusalem
as Israel's capital and was
enthusiastically applauded
when he asserted that Israel
and Jewry will never again
abandon the Holy City.
Rabbi Levin appealed
for unity in Jewish ranks in
support of kashrut. Without
mentioning it in substance,
he referred to a statement in
last week's Jewish News in
which the authority of the
Vaad was challenged by a
competing kashrut super-
vising rabbi. He declared
that unity is an obligation,
that it is a duty to avoid re-
sort to "makhleikes," dis-
putes.

Berel Wein, dean of Yeshiva
Shaarey Tora of Monsey,

dress, declared that the
strength of the Detroit Vaad
Harabonim is symbolic of
the inspiration that stems
from loyalties to Jewish
traditions. He said that a
strong Detroit Vaad spells
strength for the entire
American Jewish commu-
nity in the sense of _provid-
ing the link that makes for
total Jewish cooperation in
upholding the traditions
that are the very life of the
people Israel.
Rabbi Wein, who is the
son-in-law of Rabbi
Leizer Levin, joined him
in acclaiming the obser-
vance of Yom Yeru-
shalayim, Jerusalem,
Day with em-
phasis on Jewry never
abandoning it and Israel.
Irwin Cohn, Cantor
Hyman Adler arid Julius
Rothenberg were other par-
ticipants in the program.

Ross presented a resolution
from the Michigan State
