Feldman said the Fellow- ship was formed out of the conviction that ordination of women and other crucial issues must be deliberated through traditional Halakhic process. Siegel told the JTA, after the Tuesday vote, that "this vote will cer- tainly influence the mem- bers of the faculty senate to reverse the decision last year and approve the ad- mission of women to the program of ordination" at the JTS. Rabbi Donald Price, a fellowship regional chairman, told the JTA that members of the fel- lowship proposed that "a nine-member panel be commissioned by the in- coming president to study and evaluate the rules and procedures of the Committee on Jewish Law and Standards." The new president is Rabbi Seymour Cohen of Chicago, who had served as vice president of the RA. He succeeded Rabbi Saul Teplitz of Wood- mere, N.Y. Each convention has several ses- sions on resolutions. When the delegates came to the resolutions session on the last day of the 80th con- vention, they were handed a sheet of paper which in- cluded both the texts of a formal resolution reporting favorably on the work of the Committee on Law and Standards and the proposal from the opposition propos- ing the nine-member panel. Delegates then moved to combine the resolutions by including the call for a spe- cial panel which would be instructed to report back in writing to the RA no later than Jan. 1, 1981. Price said a fellowship steering committee and national and regional chairmen were chosen at the initial meeting of the fellowship and that "many more" RA mem- bers were expected to join the fellowship. He said the national chairmen besides Rabbi Groner are Rabbis Morris Friedman of Valley Stream, N.Y.; Morton Waldman of Jackson Heights, N.Y.; and David Algaze of Forest Hills, N.Y. Price also said that a number of regional confer- ences are being planned to discuss ordination of women and other issues and that the primary goal of the fel- lowship is "to discuss how Halakha should develop." (JTA) — The head of the world's Conservative rab- binate last week assailed the "mixing of politics and religion" in Israel, called for an end to the practice of "politicizing theology" and "theologizing politics," and questioned the "theological rationale" of the Gush Emunim for creating set- tlements on the West Bank for ideological rather than security considerations, thereby causing "great di- visions in the Jewish world." Rabbi Saul Teplitz, in his presidential address to the 80th annual convention of the Rabbinical Assembly, was also critical of the Israel Labor Party "for joining hands with the National Religious Party to pass a law in the Knesset that transferred the authority to decide who can perform Jewish marriages from the Minister of Religious Af- fairs to the Chief Rabbi- nate."
