Evangelical Politics

By RABBI MARC

(A Seven Arts Feature)

In Dallas, Texas, Carl
Thomas is running for re-
election as sheriff. His sup-
porters sent out 10,000 let-
ters to potential voters that
read as follows: "Dear Fel-
low Christians, This letter
is not to solicit any money,
but to ask for your help in a
very vital cause — the up-
coming sheriffs election. As
you may or may not know
the incumbent Sheriff Carl
Thomas is a member of the
Lord's Church and in our
opinion is worthy of your
consideration."
That mixing of religion
Ind politics, of establishing
a religious test for candi-
dates running for public
office, is a violation of the
United States Constitution.
And it is happening with in-
creasing frequency in many
parts of the United States,
especially in the Bible Belt
whose Fundamentalist
Christians boldly appeal for
votes with such slogans as
"Christians want Chris-
tians in office."
The "Washington for
Jesus" rally several weeks
ago was the tip of the grow-
ing evangelical iceberg.
While all this was going on,
a national workshop of some
300 leading Catholics, Pro-
testants, Evangelicals and
Jews met also in Dallas and
condemned what they
called the creeping sacrali-
zation of politics.
They saw parallels be-
tween' this fundamen-
talist politics and Ayatol-
lah Khomeini's Islamic
politics and warned that
both could lead to human
disasters. Such theologi-
cal politics which claim
that God dictates certain
political solutions pre-
vents the possibilities of

compromise or alterna-
tive solutions.
Fortunately, there are
growing numbers of
enlightened evangelical
Christians who realize that
efforts to Christianize the
American government can
be as dangerous as the Is-
lamization of Iran. They are
organizing to preserve
democracy from our home-
grown fanatics, and they
deserve every possible as-
sistance.

Israeli Scientists, Develop Wine'

TEL AVIV — A non-
alcoholic natural beverage
similar in color, taste, and
aroma to wine, has been de-
veloped by Tel Aviv Univer-
sity scientists and is ex-
pected to cost 25 percent to
28 percent of the current
price of wine.
Produced from a by-
product of the wine indus-
try, which has hitherto not
been utilized in the wine-
making process, the wine
substitute contains no arti-
ficial compounds and only

the natural substance of the
grape. The wine substitute
is produced by a non-
alcoholic fermentation
process.
The wine-like beverage
was developed by Prof.
Henry Margulis and Prof.
Avraham Lifshitz and
should prove useful for
those who limit their alco-
hol intake, either for health,
religious, or ethical reasons.
The beverage comes in
"dry" or "semi-sweet" varie-
ties.

Inflation Cure?

HAIFA — The new Is-
raeli currency, the shekel,
may prove effective in help-
ing solve theecountry's eco-
nomic problems, but only if
it is linked to a serious
change in policy, according
to Harvard Prof. Otto Ecks-
tein, a former adviser to
President Johnson. Ecks-
tein made his statement in
Haifa where he delivered
the Technion lecture in
memory of Prof. Pinhas
Naor.
Prof. Eckstein noted that
similar measures had been
taken earlier, in post-World
War II West Germany and
in France: "In these cases,
the reduction of the cur-
rency was part of a change
in policy and was effective.
But it was the change in pol-
icy that was important."
