Jos. Handleman Cited
With ARMDI'S Award

WASHINGTON (JTA) —
In petitions deposited with
the British and French em-
bassies, the American
Jewish Congress called on
the governments of Prime
Minister Margaret
Thatcher and President
Giscard d'Estaing "to re-
pudiate the drift toward ac-
commodation of the PLO
and the PLO's purpose of
destroying Israel, all too
evident in recent state-
ments and actions at the
United Nations and
elsewhere."

WASHINGTON (JTA) —
The American Jewish
Committee's Washington
chapter has abandoned two
resolutions its officers had
originated critical of Israel's
settlements policy in Judea
and Samaria and adopted a
draft submitted to it by its
national board in New
York.
The chapter voted the na-
tional office's draft in a
show of hands, counted
37-23. With about 100
members having attended
the meeting, some 40
abstained.

It is customary to read the
Book of Ruth in the
synagogue on Shavuot for a
number of reasons.
For one thing, King
David is reputed to have
passed away on Shavuot.
Since his genealogy is
traced to Ruth it was con-
sidered fitting, to read the
Book of Ruth on Shavuot.
Secondly, the experience
of Ruth as the model of a
convert who came into the
Jewish fold from a non-
Jewish background, resem-

bles the experience of the
Jewish people who con-
verted fully to the Jewish
faith on Shavuot when the
Torah was revealed by the
Almighty at Mount Sinai.
In this same vein it is
mentioned that the Hebrew
letters of the name Ruth
have the arithmetic equiv-
alent of the number 606.
This is the number of com-
mandments that Ruth
added to her life in order to
convert to Judaism.
