`Great Is Peace' Volume
Presented to Jimmy Carter

JERUSALEM — On
April 15, in the Cabinet
Room, prior to the opening
of their official talks, Prime
Minister Begin presented
President Carter with a
personally inscribed vol-
ume of "Great Is Peace," in
recognition of the
President's efforts in bring-
ing about the Israeli-
Egyptian Peace Treaty.
On May 27, 1979, at El
Arish, Prime Minister
Begin gave President
Anwar Sadat a volume of
"Great Is Peace" as the offi-
cial gift to commemorate
the peace treaty.
"Great Is Peace" is a com-
pletely new Hebrew-
English edition • of the
"Perek ha-Shalom," the
talmudic tractate on peace.
The volume is hand-
lettered and illustrated.
Only 1,800 numbered
volumes of this master-
piece have been printed.
Each is signed by the ar-
tist and the editor. Each

Female MK
Sees Israel
in 'Acute Crisis'

NEW YORK (JTA) —
Shulamit Aloni, one of the
most persistent fighters for
human rights and religious
freedom in Israel, said that
Israel is in an acute crisis
and warned that if no major
changes are forthcoming
"Israel will turn into a
ghetto with an army."
The outspoken Aloni, who
is deeply involved in the
struggle for women's rights,
is one of eight women mem-
bers in Israel's Knesset and
the lone representative of
the Civil Rights Party.
Aloni was interviewed by
the Jewish Telegraphic
Agency prior to her visit to
Detroit earlier this month.
Speaking in Hebrew,
Aloni said that if Israelis
want to resolve the current
crisis they have "first of all
to get rid of the occupation
over another people, the
Palestinians. Secondly, we
have to order back to Israel
all the aliya emissaries here
and this, in itself, could
make the biggest aliya year
Israel has ever known." She
said Israel has to reevaluate
its relationship with dias-
pora Jewry.

The public is wiser than
the wisest critic.

is identical to the official
gifts presented to
President Sadat and
President Carter.
A limited number of the
volumes are still available
and can be obtained
through The American
Friends of Boys Town
Jerusalem, 150 South Main
St., Wood Ridge, New Jer-
sey 07075.
The "Great Is Peace" vol-
ume benefits Boys Town
Jerusalem, and the project
was aided by Detroiter Paul
Zuckerman.

NEW YORK (JTA) —
Three residents of the
Chabad Lubavitcher house
on the UCLA campus in
Westwood, Los Angeles,-,
were killed in a fire which
swept through the three-
story building early Tues-
day morning. Three of the z\
six persons in the house at
the time escaped by jump-
ing through windows. One
of them was injured as was
one of the 55 firemen who
battled the blaze.
The Bnai Brith 1._
senger of Los Angeles re-
ported that the fire depart-
ment has labeled the fire of
suspicious origin, pending
completion of an investiga-
tion now under way. The
building served as West
Coast headquarters of the
Chabad
Lubavitcher
movement.
According to Ron Sol-
omon of the Bnai Brith Mes-
senger, one of the victims
was a 17-year-old student
from Beverley Hills, an-
other was a recently arrived
immigrant from the Soviet
Union in his mid-20s and
the third was a 32-year-old
handyman.
The fire department said
the building was a total loss
and estimated the damage
at $1 million.
