Sen. Weicker Urges Israel's
Defenders to Pursue Vigilance

In an address in which he
endorsed Israel's right to es-
tablish the type of settle-
ment that would protect the
state against those who ad-'
vocate violence, Sen. Lowell '
Weicker of Connecticut, ad-
dressing an audience of 800
at Cong. Shaarey Zedek
Tuesday evening, urged the
defenders of the Jewish
state never to deflate their
defensive roles for Israel.
Warning of an evident
erosion in the ranks of Is-
rael's friends in Congress,
Sen. Weicker urged un-
hesitant action in behalf of
Israel. He was critical of
Jews who panicked when
there were criticisms, dur-
ing the Andrew Young and

other incidents.
Ridiculing the conten-
tion that if Israel gave up
the areas acquired after
the 1967 war the U.S.
would then provide pro-
tection for Israel, the
Connecticut Senator said
that NATO has lost faith
in such American
pledges, viewing the role
of this country as being
unable to protect anyone,
even itself.
Sen. Weicker gave the
annual Lichter Memorial
Lecture established in trib-
ute to the late Adolph Lich-
ter. After an introductory
address by Dr. Peter Mar-
tin, co-chairman of the
synagogue's cultural corn-

mission, announcing plans
for future Shaarey Zedek
cultural programs, Dr. Max
Lichter introduced Sen.
Weicker and presided dur-
ing the question-answer
period.

Council of Europe Resolution
on Middle East Angers WJC

PARIS (JTA) — The
European branch of the
World Jewish Congress,
which held a two-day meet-
ing here last week, ex-
pressed its deep consterna-
tion at the resolution of the
Council of Europe's Par-
liamentary Assembly on
the Middle East situation
which called for the re-
placement or amendment of
United Nations Security
Council Resolution 242 and
expressed doubts about the
Camp David accords as the
basis for a comprehensive
Mideast settlement.
• The assembly resolution,
which was approved last
month by 170 votes with no
opposition and only 10
abstentions, viewed the
Camp David accords as
seriously jeopardizing the
current peace negotiations.
The WJC meeting also
expressed its strong objec-
tion to the assembly's
equating the right of Israel
to exist with the demand for
the recognition of the Pales-
tine Liberation Organiza-
tion as a negotiating part-
ner in the peace talks.
Representatives from
20 Jewish communities
took part in the two-day
WJC meeting, including
delegates from Romania,
Yugoslavia, Hungary,
Poland, East Germany,
Czechoslovakia and Bul-
garia. The meeting
marked the return of the
Council of Jewish Com-
munities of Morocco to
active membership in the
WJC.
