Among those attending were Secretary General Kurt Waldheim, U.S. Am- bassador Donald McHenry, Latin American diplomats as well as representatives of West European countries. In Montreal, more than 2,000 people filled the main hall of the Museum of Fine Arts and the Expo Theater to mark the event. David Azrieli, president of the Canadian Zionist Federation's Eastern Region, greeted the audi- ence and spoke about the "32 eventful years of Israel's existence." Maccabi Union Settlement Set TEL AVIV (JTA) — A settlement with an educa- tional and sports center will be established by the Mac-. cabi World Union near Mod- i'in, the ancient site of the Maccabeans, it was an- nounced at the meeting of the executive of the World Maccabi Union in Israel. It will include a school for young leadership training, a youth hostel and dor- mitories to house 400 vis- itors from abroad in addi- tion to 120 housing units for permanent settlers. There will be a modern sports complex. The village will serve as the urban center for nine agricultural settle- ments in the area. Afghans Seek Rakah Support TEL AVIV (ZINS) — The president of the Afghanis- tan pro-Communist gov- ernment sent a letter to the Israeli Communist Party (Rakah) reporting on cur- rent developments. The let- ter includes a statement that Soviet intervention in Afghanistan was at the re- quest of the Afghanistan president: The Israeli Communist Party was asked in the let- ter to express its "Solidarity - with Afghanistan."
