Israel Independence Day Celebration
Contest Winners Are Announced

two-day community-wide
Israel Independence Day
celebration at the Jewish
Community Center were
announced this week.
They are: Daniel Weiner,
Abby Guyer, Caryn Fin-
kelstein, Michael Kahana
and Josh Newman. The con-
test was sponsored by the
Jewish Educators Council.

Cheese Blintzes
By NORMA BARACH

BATTER
3 eggs
1 cup flour
1 tsp. salt
1/4 cup milk
3 /4 cup water •
Combine ingredients and
spread thinly on a lightly
greased, 6-inch skillet, just
covering the bottom of the
pan. When top is dry, turn out
on a clean towel to cool. Do not
let leaves touch until they are
cool. Makes 18 to 20 leaves.
FILLING
1 /2 lb. dry. cottage cheese
1 /2 lb. small curd cottage
cheese
1 medium egg
1/2 cup sugar
1 /4 tsp. vanilla
1-2 tbsps. flour
Mix all cheese filling ingre-
dients together. Put a teas-
poon of cheese filling on top of
each leaf; fold in at two sides
and then roll (forming a flat
roll). Brown in hot butter or oil
until golden on both sides.
Serve with sour cream.

Dramatic readings were
presented by Carolyn
Broida, Renee Gatlen, Ei-
leen Gatlen, Steve Fine,
Steve Gable and Lenny Be-
rman. Rabbi Harold Loss of
Temple Israel conducted the
Yizkor portion of the pro-
gram.
In a special ceremony,
12 torches, representing
the 12 tribes of Israel,
were lighted. Partici-
pants included: Uri Amir,
Betty Bienstock, Sharon
Isaac
Blumenberg,
Martin
Teitelbaum,
Waters, Dulcie Rosen-
feld, Dr. Firooz Banooni,
Mical Spektor and Rev.
John Freed. Stanley
Frankel, chairman of the
National Young Leader-
ship Cabinet of the
United Jewish Appeal,
was master of cere-
monies. The ceremony
was developed by Re-
uven Leibovich and
Micha Maron. James
August created the
script.
El Al sponsored a toast to
Israel's 32nd anniversary
and donated prizes for the
Maccabia.
A special student concert
of Israel music was ar-
ranged by Sylvia Starkman.
Performing were: Amy
Mayer, Lisa Schreier, John
Zemmol'and Karen Knight.
Robert Lipson of West
Bloomfield won the Detroit
Zionist Federation contest.

Interfaith Youth Symposium
on Holocaust Slated Monday

An interfaith high school
youth symposium on the
Holocaust will be conducted
9 a.m. Monday at the
United Hebrew Schools
building.
The Jewish Community
Council of Metropolitan De-
troit; Detroit Round Table,
National Conference of
Christians and Jews;
Jewish Educators Council
and Schools Office of the Ar-
chdiocese of Detroit are co-
sponsors of the day-long
program. More than 300
Jewish and Christian stu-
dents from private, paroc-
hial and public schools are
expected to attend.
The symposium will
examine Holocaust-related
topics with multi-media
presentations, a survivors'
panel and several seminars.
Subjects to be explored in-
clude the following: Dis-
crimination towards
minorities, a history of
Nazism, governments by
absolute power, literature
of the Holocaust and a sur-
vey of resistance move-
ments.
"The Avenue of the
Righteous," a film docu-
menting Christianity's
role in combatting the
horrors of Nazism, and
the Anti-Defamation
League's slide presenta-
tion "Camera of My Fam-
ily," will be shown to the

Guests at Seders

Resettlement Service, in
cooperation with area con-
gregations and individuals,
placed 155 recent Russian
immigrants at Seders for
the holiday of Passover.
Twenty-four families
were hosted at the congre-
gational Seders of Temple
Kol Ami, Cong. Shaarey
Zedek, Cong. Beth Ab-
rahain Hillel Moses and
Temple Israel.
