N. Simons in an address de-
livered to a large audience
at Temple Beth El Tuesday

Replete with anecdotes,
filled with accounts of true
happenings during his
strivings in behalf of scores
of Jewish and civic causes,
Simons told how a late
Michigan Supreme Court
Justice labeled him "The
Town Schnorrer."
Emphasizing that "the
essence of Judaism is
Zedaka," Simons defined
the term:
"In ancient days,
Zedaka was considered

LEONARD SIMONS

"In today's world, we
oversimplify Zedaka by de-
fining it as 'charity' — or
`philanthropy.' "
As a personal note, Si-
mons added:
"Working in the cause
of Zedaka, the essence
of Judaism paid big divi-
dends for me. My bread
came back as cake. It
brought me great inner
satisfaction, gave me
many new and stimulat-
ing interests.
"It expanded my knowl-
edge, permitted me to be-
come a world traveler,
helped me become ac-
quainted with a large list of
outstanding men and
women and enabled us to
help countless thousands of
men, women and children
with the kinds of assistance
that met their particular
personal problems. It has

helped fulfill my life."
He pointed to the close
friendship with his partner
Lawrence Michelson who
encouraged and assisted
him in his efforts in the 60
years of the partnership.
Because he had helped
causes regardless of de-
nominational divisions,
Simons admitted "I played
religion across the board."
Simons listed his favo-
rite charities — Home for
the Aged, Jewish Welfare
Federation, Sinai Hospi-
tal, the Allied Jewish
Campaign and Temple
Beth El, where he served
as president.
In a record of services by
the Jewish community to
Wayne State University he
mentioned the numerous
academic buildings that
were financed by Jews as
well as the Leonard Simons
building that houses WSU
Press.
He spoke with pride about
the Leonard and Harriette
Simons Forest planted in
their honor by the Jewish
National Fund in Israel and
commended highly the
achievements of the JNF
which made the desert blos-
som in the Holy Land.
Story after story drew
laughter and applause from
an appreciative audience
whose cheers were ex-
pressions of admiration for
the eminent Detroit Jewish
leader.
His labors in business,

medical, social services, his
work for Wayne State Uni-
versity which awarded him °
an honorary doctorate, his
travels, all punctured in his
analyses with humor, gave
Doctor Simons the good
cheer of a fraternal audi-
ence.
