It's a different song when
everything's wrong, when
you're feeling infernally
mortal; when it's 10 against
one, and hope there is none,
buck up, little soldier, and
chortle!

By RABBI BERNARD

Synagogue Council of America
Adolph Hitler, in his
"Mein Kampf," detailed a
plan to destroy the Jews. He
gained power and almost
succeeded in fulfilling that
plan.
Yasir Arafat, in his
statement of Palestine Lib-
eration Organization prin-
ciples, details a plan to de-
stroy Israel. He has not
gained sufficient power.
Knowing what we do now,
would world leaders have
met and given recognition
to a Hitler or an Eichmann?
Then why do responsible,
law-abiding leaders meet
with Arafat?
There are frequent
comparisons between
Menahem Begin, the un-
derground fighter, and
Arafat, as a similar "pat-
riot." Is there anything in
Begin's writings but
hopes, prayers, and ex-
pressions of devotion to
his Arab brothers and
their five states? Can one
justify a comparison of
the patriot Begin who
sought Jewish fulfillment
in statehood to the bar-
baric, violent statements
of an Arafat?
Suppose, as has been
suggested in good humor,
Moses had made a right
turn in leading the Children
of Israel out of Egypt, and
there would now be five
Jewish states with an
abundance of open land and
endless income from oil. Is it
imaginable that these
Jewish states would permit
750,000 or a million of their
people to languish in pov-
erty and sickness for 30
years on their borders?
When will the world take
seriously the reality of the
"oneness" and interrelated
nature of the world, as the
result of which there is a re-
lationship between the fol-
lowing: the world's silence
about the bombing of the
bus of children on a road to
Tel Aviv, a young American
photographer killed . . . and
the tribulations of hostages
in Teheran and Colombia,
and the cold-blooded assas-
sination of Archbishop
Romero of San Salvador.
Violence unopposed any-
where invites violence
everywhere.
Inevitably, there will be
dire consequences for
Kreisky's Austria and Gis-
card's France for their
recognition of the anarchic,
violent forces of an Arafat.
