Donna Frank, associate
chairman of the committee
with Katzin, presided at the

member of the committee
conducting the aid program
for the Boston retina center.
Dr. Charles L. Sche-

principal address, is the
founder of the Boston re-

Dr. Schepens has a record
of heroism and of having re-

from the Nazi death camps
when he was in the under-
ground fighting Nazism
during World War II.
Dr. Schepens came to the
United States in 1947 as a
fellow in ophthalmic re-

Canada to Move
Against Ex-Nazis

TORONTO (JTA) —
Canada's new Solicitor
General Robert Kaplan said
Monday that he was satis-
fied that war crimes charges
can be proven against some
Canadian residents and
that he will seek legal
frameworks for such action.
Kaplan spoke to reporters
after a meeting in Washing-
ton Sunday with Nazi-
hunter Simon Wiesenthal,
director of the war crimes
documentation center in
Vienna, and with U.S. gov-
ernment officials. Wiesent-
hal refused to come to
Canada because of alleged
government inaction
against war criminals liv-
ing there.
Kaplan said he promised
that the government would
be more cooperative in the
future. "I am satisfied there
are witnesses and war
crimes could be proved," he
said.

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
The standard of living in Is-
rael dropped six percent in
the last quarter of 1979, ac-
cording to figures released
by the Central Bureau of
Statistics. Private con-
sumption was down one
percent at the end of 1979,
compared to the end of 1978.
Economists believe this
trend continued through
the first quarter of 1980 but
there are no complete fig-
ures yet to confirm it. The
evidence is seen in the drop
of imports of consumer
goods.
Last year a family of four
had a monthly average ex-
pense of IL23,712 (about
$550). Of this, 25 percent
was spent on food, 20 per-
cent on housing, 6.7 percent
on clothing, 3.5 percent on
petrol and electricity, 5.5
percent for housing equip-
ment, and the rest for var-
ious services.

The optical physics
laboratory of the insti-

duced the Equator-Plus

show overall details of
the interior of the eye that
heretofore would have

Dr. Richard Pharo, re-

ton eye institute, was
among the guests at the
April 17 function.
