The Best of Everything

HOW DID STAF-
FORD'S Restaurants get
their name? . . . 56 years
ago, in 1924, founder George
Vatsis and his partner were
opening their dining spot on
Linwood, but couldn't think
of a name . . . Fellow walk-
ing by came in and got into
the discussion about what to
call the place.
"Why not name it after -
me," he jokingly said .. .
But so it was . . . and the
fellow, a Dr. Stafford,
brought birth to the time-
honored restaurant name.
The all-new Stafford's on
Coolidge and Nine Mile
will be open again . . . as of
next week . . with a pleas-
ant, light and airy look .. .
new kitchen . . . new carpet-
ing and drapes . . . etc. . .
150 seating with a 14-seat
counter.
At Orchard Mall, Staf-
ford's of West Bloomfield
now has entertainment .. .
Wednesday through Satur-
day . . . with one-man band
Dennis Vennier . . . The
private banquet facilities
here are for 100 or more.
LOTS OF CHANGES at
Oscar's on Northwestern
. . . Plus its Happy Hour be-
ginning this Saturday from
3 to 7 with half-price drinks
and live music for dancing
. . . and the April 27
country-western shindig .. .
Oscar's has relaxed its dress
code for weekdays . . . Dress
jeans are acceptable now.
There'll also be a party
honoring "Singles Day,"
April 30, 8 to closing.
THE NAME "MUER"
has been an honored one in
Detroit since 1905 when Joe
Muer, Chuck's grandfather,

opened a factory for making
fine cigars• . . In 1929, he
opened Muer's Oyster
House on the corner of
Gratiot and Vernor, where
the interntationally-
famous restaurant stilll
stands .. .
It is a separate restaurant
operation, with no business
connection to Chuck Muer's
17 restaurants (will be 191i'
September) from his Detroit
beginning in 1964 . . .
That's when his C.A. Muer
Corp. was formed to operate
the restaurants -and food
services in the soon-to-be-
opened Hotel Pontchartrain
in Detroit's Civic Center ..
Before that, Chuck had
been an IBM sales represen-
tative.
OVERHEARD ... "I
don't want to say the bride
and groom were young, but
the wedding cake was a
Hostess Twinkie."
LOEHMANN'S AT
Hunter's Square and its
connecting Tally Hall ..
with boutique shops and
foods of all ethnic faiths,
will encompass around
47,000 square feet ... next_
to Wing Hong's on 14 Mile
on west side of Orchard
Lake Rd.
The Raleigh Square Mar-
ket Place . . . same theme
. . . a bit more lavish in idea
. . . with two already large
restaurants . . . and a huge
standing kitchen . . . will
take over 100,000 square
feet.
Both say they will open
this year.
WITH ALL HIS biggie
hits, Barry Manilow still
digs deep for an oldie
standard to give him his
next hit record . . * "I Don't
Want To Walk Without
You, Baby."
SPOTS ON silverware at
restaurants don't necessar-
ily mean they're dirty . . .
Some dish washing deter-
gents do this ... and a good
waitress or bus boy will
check before placing them
at their station tables.
MAIL DEPT. . .. "Why
not a 'Best of Everything'
for your pets? Our son has a
food store for pets — be they
rabbits, dogs, cats, horses.
He concerns himself with
the best types of food, and
because of his love for ani-
mals went into business. He
also has a ream of knowl-
edge on what to feed the
animals and how to care for
them. Besides, he is a very
charming and nice person.
His store is at 3101 Orchard
Lake Rd., Keego Harbor —
Leslie's."
-
His Mother,
Sophie Lupovich
JANET CARTER, who
for 14 years used to cook all
those goodies Dubbs was
noted for . . . soups, stuffed
cabbage, etc. . . . is making
them again at the same lo-
cation . . . for Green Ten res-
taurant, Greenfield and 10
Mile.
UNFORSEEN PROB-
LEMS have delayed the
much-looked-for, more than
100 items brunch to be held
on Sundays at Topinka's
