It was Mailer's second Pulitzer. ' The controversial book, termed a work of fiction by Mailer and his publisher, is the story of the life and execution of Gary Gillmore. Mailer's previous prize was for "Armies of Night," a non-fiction work published in 1969. Ellen H. Goodman, a former columnist at the De- troit Free Press and now with the Boston Globe, and Leon F. Litwack, a professor of history at the University of California at Berkeley, were also among the 21 re- cipients of the prestigious prizes awarded in jour- nalism, letters, drama, and music.
