Kissinger Recalls
Life Under Nazis
NEW YORK — A section
of Henry Kissinger's "White
House Years" describes the
young Kissinger's experi-
ences in Nazi Germany:
"Until I emigrated to
America, my family and I
endured progressive ostra-
cism and discrimination.
My father lost the teaching
job for which he had worked
all his life. The friends of my
parents' youth shunned
them. I was forced to attend
a segregated school.
"Every walk in the street
turned into an adventure,
for my German contem-
poraries were free to b( p
Jewish children withoL.....n-
terference by the police.
"Through this period,
America acquire" a
wondrous quality fc.
I would never forget
what an inspiration it
had been to me during
cruel and degrading
years.
"I always remembered
the thrill when I first
walked the streets of New
York City. Seeing a group of
boys, I began to cross to the
other side to avoid being be-
aten up. And then I remem-
bered where I was."
