of my minor assistants, and
they had trouble with the
spelling of the name — 'it
was, as I recall, S-m-i-t-h.
"First we were told we'd
have to wait, then that we
wouldn'tlave time to go to
the bar, and while we tee-
tered, a decision was made
to seat us.
We were greeted with
what I thought was more
caution than cordiality.
Sometimes members of
my staff are assigned to
eat in the restaurant
where I am dining, but we
exchange no signs of re-
cognition.
"My operatives later re-
ported that members of the
restaurant management
kept a wary eye on me dur-
ing dinner. (I have become
reconciled to being recog-
nized in restaurants, but
grateful that the pretense of
anonymity is respected.)
"There is some very good
food to be had at the Draw
Bridge, although it doesn't

suggested by the notables of
King Arthur's Castle

Bridge is supposed to be a
replica.
"In sum, the food was
good, but nothing to set our
tastebuds capering in de-
lirious joy.
"As I said earlier, the
Draw Bridge's ac-
ceptance of my criticism
last winter was both gra-
cious and smart.
The ideas could be copied
profitably by a West Side
restaurant that has
screamed for vengence upon
me once or twice, going to
some expense to achieve its
goal.
"I understand its Old
Faithful Cadre of regular
customers rally round to
write letters to the editor.
Those who manage to get a
letter published get free
dinners.
"What's goint to happen I
don't know when those reg-
ulars who get two free
dinners per letter find that
other old regulars get four
free dinners.
"If — or maybe that
should be when — your read
of a restaurant operator

by formerly admiring cus-
tomers, you'll know which
restaurant I'm talking ab-
out."

This is why so many have

former Alvaro's eatery.
, It's already become
widely noted for some very
fine bar-b-q-ribs . . . But
those onion rings there are
great . . . freshly cut, bat-

onions.
One night there we would
have spent the entire eve-

the bar-b-q ribs were much
too good to let even one bone
