In spite of increasingly restrictive immigration laws after 1930, Jewish immigration, mainly from Nazi-dominated Europe, continued. In ther period 1956-1957, 2,500 Jews from Egypt and about 1,000 from North Africa (mainly from Morocco) were admitted, and from time to time other groups, including close to 6,000 Hungarians, were able to enter the country. The Jewish population of Brazil today numbers about 150,000. It includes a few thousand immigrants from Israel.
