NEW YORK — In a mod-
ern adaptation of an ancient
Judaic tradition, a hand-
picked group of young
graduate students and pro-
fessionals have paused in -
their career studies and
vocations to immerse them-
selves in Torah in the
Chaver Program at Rabbi
Isaac Elchanan Theological
Seminary (RIETS), an af-
filiate of Yeshiva Univer-
sity.
The Chaver Program,
begun in 1978, offers stu-
dents who do not plan on be-
coming rabbis the opportu-
nity to spend one year delv-
ing deeply into the world of
Judiac scholarship. Stu-
dents accepted into the pro-
gram take a year-long
'break between college and
graduate school, or from
their chosen professions, for
an intensive examination of
Jewish studies as they re-
late to their respective
careers.

OPEN SUNDAY, APRIL 6, 12-4 FOR THIS SALE
After the year of study,
which is offered tuition-
free, the Chaver candidate
continues a program of
Jewish studies on his own,
the curriculum organized
by the student working in
conjunction with RIETS fa-
culty members. At the time
he completes graduate
school, the student returns
to RIETS for a two to four
week period of summation
to gain the title "Chaver."
The title itself goes back
some two millenia and
evolved during the 18th and
19th Centuries into one
which denoted a signal
token of recognition of pi-
ety, exemplary scholarship,
and service to the Jewish
community.
There are six students
in the Chaver Program at
RIETS this year, includ-
ing David Foster of De-
troit, 20, a graduate of
Yeshiva College in 1979.
Foster will enter Colum-
bia University next year
to study business.
According to Dr. Norman
Lamm, president of Yeshiva
University, the program is
aimed at helping mold pro-
fessionals who will se
only a patient or a c
but a sensitive, feeling
human being."
"It is vital that the profes-
sional have a solid ground-
ing in Judaic law and
thought as the moral found-
ation of his career and as a
guidepost to his practice,"
Dr. Lamm states.

Cure for Cold?
REHOVOT (ZINS) —
Kibutz Netzer-Sereni is
planning to market a new
device within three years
that reportedly brings relief
from allergies and the
common cold.
The machine is called
Rhinotherm. It warms the
user's nose with a stream of
hot, warm air foi- 15 min-
utes.
The developers claim that
in 85 percent of those tested
one application brings im-
