THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Israel Looks Forward to 1982 World Cup Qualifying Matches With New Manager - By SIMON GRIVER (World Zionist Organization) While for international sports-fans 1980 is an Olympic year, for soccer fans it is also the time when the qualifying matches for the 1982 World Cup finals get under way. Israel will battle 160 other nations for 20 final 1 ces in the Spanish sun- . Spain as hosts, and Az entina as reigning champions, qualify auto- matically. For the first time 22 teams, rather than the traditional 18, will compete in the final series of matches. Israel's chances of reach- ing Spain are slim because they have been removed from the Asian group in which they normally play, and have instead been drawn into a tough Euro- pean group with Scotland, Portugal, Northern Ireland and Sweden. All the same, Israeli soccer fans are looking forward with relish to the eight games (four home, four away) against top European opposition. Jack Mansell, the new coach of Israel's national soccer team, talks to players. The Israeli Football Association dismissed coach Manny Shaeffer in December, following the national team's disap- pointing early exit from the Olympic Soccer competition, and brought in Englishman Jack Mansell. He has signed a six month contract that covers the team's first two matches, which are at home to North- ern Ireland and Sweden. The stocky frame of this effervescent and energetic 56-year-old native of Man- chester encompasses a wealth of soccer knowledge and know-how. In the 1940s and 50s he played 'outside left for Brighton, Cardiff and Portsmouth and he re- presented England on sev- eral occasions. After retiring as a player, he coached Rotherham and Sheffield Wednesday. Since 1961 he has worked outside England — in Holland, Turkey, Greece and most recently as coach of the Bahrain national team. Mansell was in- vited to Tel Aviv in No- vember and terms were agreed. "The prospect of coming to a country as interesting as Israel certainly stimu- lated our (Mansell and his wife) exploratory instincts. Over the years we have be- come something of experts on churches and mosques; after visiting Jerusalem we have become connoisseurs and are also catching up on synagogues," the coach said. "But first and foremost I'm here for the soccer. The players lack organization and experience, even though they have natural skill and technique. The potential is there. I've gathered together a squad of 22 and with hard work and determination six or seven of these lads could be good enough to play in the English league." The English champions, Liverpool, have agreed to release Avi Cohen for the coming matches. Mean- while Cohen's former club, Maccabi Tel Aviv, recently signed up English Jewish star Barry Silkman from Manchester City for $100,000. Silkman has made aliya and should be able to represent \Israel. "Ultimately I will be judged on how well the team does in its matches. Personally I judge myself by the standards of a teacher. I know how good the players were when I started training them and if they are a lot better when I finish, then win or lose, succeed or fail, I am satisfied. Charges NEW YORK — Yeshiva University ranked 30th among the nation's top 100 colleges and universities in federal research and de- velopment funding, accord- ing to 1978 figures released last month by the National Science Foundation. The institution also ranked 43rd among the same 100 schools in total ob- ligations from 14 federal agencies. Although we lost 2-0, I was encouraged to see that the players had learned many of the lessons that I'd taught them." Israel has reached the World Cup finals only once. That was in Mexico in 1970 and they performed re- markably well, drawing 1-1 with Sweden before losing 1-0 to Italy. "I'd be a fool to be over- confident," admits Mansell. "What clince do we stand when Northern Ireland runs onto the field at Tel Aviv's Bloomfield Stadium with George Best, Pat Jen- nings, and a galaxy of stars? In theory we've no hope — but in soccer anything can happen." 398-6894 Specializing in Candids and Video Emiles Beauty Salon 31409 Southfield, Beverly Hills, N. of,13 Proudly announces that a Fantastic Cosmetologist & European Stylist SALLY MARROGY Has Returned To Stay Please Call her at 642-3315 SAVE UP TO 60% ON DIAMONDS • We Sell Diamonds Only • By Appointment Only Call Jerry Turken at The•New York Diamond Cutting COmpany tke 1°C k OP"( "The Diamond Cutters" 3000 Town Center, Southfield, Michigan.R. 0 °' ?\\ \?‘\- \-V \\ NE56P's"‘A 0 s yl--6° 355 2300 - C' The New York DIamond.Cuttmq Company. 1977 Ao3eCtoo TO THE NEW MAN IN YOUR LIFE HARUARD EXTENDS HEARTIEST WISHES TO ALL OUR LI- Rai-Jtiiit7pacti MEN DAVID BLAU, Farm.
