RESPONSIBLE LEADERSHIP
The fact is that from the Conference of
During the trying weeks of disputes by
Jewish spokesmen and their friends in the Presidents of Major American Jewish Organ-
non-Jewish community over an act so grave in izations have come forth prompt declarations,

found it necessary to apologize for failure to be for Jews everywhere, as soon as an issue

the vigilance necessary to protect the status of people they represent must speak out often,
the state of Israel. One Israeli extremist went a with dignity and with courage. It is in such
bit too far in his attack on American Jewish fashion that leadership gains strength.
Jewish leaders have not buckled under pres- -

have met with President Carter's representa- sures. If it becomes necessary to challenge the
powers in office, even the President of the

RABBINIC INJUSTICE
An Israel Knesset vote granting to the Chief
Rabbinate the right to rule on who is qualified
to perform weddings, and apparently also have
the privilege of ruling on divorces and recogni-
tion of certain citizenship rights, perpetuates an
injustice.
What the latest decision implies is that only
the ruling Orthodox hierarchy is to dominate
over such religious practices. It means that the
present ruling element will continue to have the
power to outlaw the Conservative and Reform
rabbis, no matter how highly qualified they
may be and how well their training has been to
perform traditional Jewish services.
While the guilt lies within the Knesset, the
fact is that it comes from the Orthodox who have
the dominating role in a government that de-
pends upon them for a majority in a coalition.
Therefore the guilt is primarily that of the rul-
ing Orthodox who are in a dominating position.
Therefore the saddening act, perpetuating un-
fairness, is a rabbinic injustice.
CREDIBILITY FOR TERROR?
Credibility for terror seems the rule rather
than the exception in European diplo• rnatic cir-
cles.
Is it fear from the suppliers of oil that caused
Lord Carrington, the British foreign secretary,
to reject the terrorist label for the PLO? Whence
stems his lack of infofmation that he should
question the existence of a PLO Covenant that
calls for Israel's destruction?
These questions are applicable not only to
British submission to the terrorists, to Austria,
but to a number of other countries with a yield-
ing to terror by having granted recognition for
the would-be destroyers of Israel.
The endorsements given to Arab terrorists —
there is no other applicable term for PLO —
invited threats to other nations. It is akin to
applauding what had happened in the embas-
sies in Teheran and Bogota. Let there be a mes-
sage to Carrington and those who share his
views: Beware of terrorism! It may also strike at
your door!
A CAMPAIGN LESSON
With more than 2,000 cards in the list of
23,000 potential contributors listed in the
Junior Division of the Allied Jewish Campaign,
in other words, more than 10 percent of the
donors are in the ranks of youth, then there is
something to be highly pleased with.
At a time when there is so much concern
about youth defections, their non-affiliation,
condoning mixed marriages and other nega-
tives, it is good to know that youth does not
reject responsibility.
The youth factor is one of the most interesting
lessons provided by the Allied Jewish- Cam-
paign. Israel's former foreign minister and war
hero, Moshe Dayan, alluded to it in his address
opening the current Campaign.
The lesson provided by youth is a healthy
factor, a hearty encouragement to all who are
currently involved in the great humanitarian
campaign in this community.

Contemporary Musicians:
Photographs, Evaluations
Arthur Rubinstein, world famous pianist, is front-paged photo-
graphically in a notable Dover book, "Contemporary Musicians." A
full-page copy of the same photograph, taken in 1964, is among the
pictures of outstanding musicians in "Contemporary Musicians in
Photographs," the photos having been taken at the Eastman School of
Music by Louis Plzen An explanatory text is by Francis Crociata.
Both text and photos combine valuably to present a gallery of
notables in the musical world.
Pizer, himself an Eastman School student, gave this work de-
voted attention, turning it into a labor of love in the process of
photography.
There is an especially notable insertion in this volume, the
photograph of Karl Haas, who is described as conductor and lecturer.
The photo of this distinguished Detroiter, whose programs are heard
daily on WJR, was taken in 1977.
Notables whose photographs appear here include Vladimir
Ashkenazy, Jack Benny, David Diamond, Antal Dorati, Duke El-
lington, Glenn Gould, Lena Horne, Vladimir Horowitz, Jose Iturbi,
Igor Menuhin, Mitch Miller, Charles Munch, David Oistrach, Jan
Peerce, Itzhak Pearlman, Leontyne .Price, Mstislav Rostropovich,
Alexander Schneider, Rudolf Serkin, Beverly Sills, Isaac Stern,
Leopold Stokowski, Igor Stravinsky, Oscar Zimmerman and a couple
score of others.
This is a gallery of eminent musicians whose works have been
heard recently and who are the admired in the field they dominate
with their various skills in music.
Pizer, in his descriptive introductory essay, states about his
photographs that in every instance where the artist's subject is not a
household name to the general concert-going public, he is a legend
within the professional music world, and especially among orchestral
musicians."
"Contemporary Musicians in Photographs" will delight musi-
cians and will be an object of admiration in homes of music-lovers in
appreciation of excellent photographic artistry.
Joy of Living in Israel
Told in Book for Youth
Israel is 6,000 miles away from most Americans, but it is almost
like next door to Jews because "it is close to the hearts of Jews
everywhere." This could be called the summation for a large, well
illustrated, splendidly narrated book for young readers. It is entitled
"I Live in Israel" and was authored by Max Frankel and Judy
Hoffman.
"I Live In Israel" (Behrman House) is like a guide book, yet it is
much more than that. It takes a young reader on a tour of the major
cities — Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Beersheba, Eilat, Haifa, Safed, and
other important spots. And it traces history, tells of the delight of
living in Israel, introduces the reader-traveler to the people and their
joys.
Maps, photographs, drawings, games appropriate to the reading
of this book, and other features combine to make this a most recom-
mendable introduction for the youth who are about to visit Israel and
who may be inspired to live in Israel.
