Last week, at the annual Spring Forum of the Jewish Welfare Federation Women's Division, more than 400 area women lis- tened to two women who played important roles in two of the best-known resis- tance movements of recent history: the Hagana in Is- rael and the Jewish Fight- ing Organization in the Warsaw Ghetto. . The notion that Jews went passively to slaughter by the Nazis is resented by many Jews, said Vladka Meed, the afternoon speaker. The armed revolt of the Jews in the Warsaw Ghetto began on the eve of Passover, 1943. The fight- ing continued four weeks and ended only when the ghetto was totally de- stroyed. One reason the armed revolt did not begin sooner was simply a lack of weapons and ammuni- fion, Mrs. Meed said. All the materials used in the fighting had to be smug- gled in Mrs. Meed was one of the smugglers. She was 17 when the Nazis invaded Poland.
