The dinner also honored Detroiter Max Fisher with the "HIAS Liberty Award" which was presented to him by Edwin Shapiro, president of HIAS! In his address, Eizenstat said that "HIAS has also recog- nized that freedom is in- divisible and that its loss by some threatens its loss to all, so your work in helping resettle In- dochinese refugees is particularly meioningful This year alone, your agency will receive and place 6,000 Indochinese refugees throughout the United States." This, he observed, "is a particularly challenging time for you, as well as our country. Last year, more than 50,000 visas were is- sued to Soviet Jews, four times the number that were issued in 1976. While this places an enormous burden on you, I know you join me in praying, despite the crisis in Afghanistan, that this flow will continue . . ." In accepting the award, Fisher stated that "there is no difference between any Jewish leader, because what is our sacred cause? First, to save every Jew that we possibly can and bring him to a homeland where he may live in peace and dig- nity. "Our second cause is to nity." It has, he added, "made America a nation of nations." Eizenstat offered this assessment in his address to more than 300 world Jewish leaders, government offi- cials, leadrs of voluntary agencies and other invited' guests at a Centennial Dinner at the Waldorf- Astoria March 23 to mark HIAS' 100 years of rescue and resettlement service for more than four million Jewish men, women and Sot. 6 S 7 Mile Rds. 869-5674 BLOOMFIELD . Yamani came to Ottawa at a special request by Prime Minister Pierre El- liott Trudeau who • invited him to be his guest at a spe- cial performance of the bal- let at the National Art Cen- ter. After meeting with Yamni, Lalonde told re- porters that relations with Arab countries, which were disrupted by the previous Conservative Party gov- ernment's plans to move the Canadian Embassy in Is- rael from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, are now im- proving since these plans did not materialize. "I don't think everything is completely clarified as yet with every Arab country, but I hope that the policies of the new Canadian gov- ernment will meet concerns that were expressed in the past," Lalonde said. Rela- tions between Canada and Arab countries worsened last summer because of Prime Minister -Joe Clark's announcement that he might move Canada's em- bassy. save for the generations of the future our great Jewish tradition which has lived so long, and third, to see that the state of Israel is strengthened and becomes a light to the world, a model of what a true, great democ- racy is." Detroiters attending the dinner included Mar- tin Citrin and Paul Zuc- kerman. On the eve of the dinner, Premier Menahem Begin of Israel sent a letter to Shapiro in which he wrote, in part: "I remember HIAS from my childhood days when hundreds of thousands of refugees came back to their home towns only to find most houses burnt or destroyed. It was HIAS who helped to build homes for the homeless. "Since then, I have al- ways felt a deep sentiment for this Jewish humanita- rian organization which as- sisted so many of our breth- ren during the wave of mass immigration from Europe to the United States, that miraculous wave which ac- tually saved incalculable numbers of our people from the disaster of the Holocaust. And again, after World War II, HIAS contin- ued its noble work, render- ing help to the homeless remnants in many coun- tries." Also on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of HIAS, Paul Hartling, United Na- tions High Commissioner for Refugees, sent a cable from his headquarters in Geneva to Shapiro con, gratulating HIAS for "the magnificent results- achieved" during its 100 years. "Thanks to your efforts," he added, "millions of up- rooted men, women and children have been able to build meaningful lives in their new homelands." Prejudice is the reason of fools.
