(Except on Specials) 20% OFF COMPLETE CARRY-OUT AVAILABLE BIGGEST THING a long-time restaurateur has to combat is decrease of es- tablishment reputation .. . whether it be with his food or service. Carl Rosenfeld at Carl's on Grand River is a case in point . . . There is no such thing as a so-so-reputation these days . . . You've either got it or you haven't . . . In the case of places like Carl's, reputation is what makes people expect even more than they would receive anywhere else . . . In many instances, what other res- taurants do, Carl's could never get away with. The economy has driven many to cut corners and in- crease prices . . . Carl Rosenfeld isn't interested in playing economic games at this stage of the game . . . As long as he's around (Carl is in his 80s) there'll be no hanky-panky and people will get what they pay for and more. While others have taken off their relish trays or reduced them to a skimp, Carl's continues with a large seven-item tray that many have de- scribed as the appetizer meal before a meal .. . with it's creamed her- ring, cottage cheese, pickled cauliflower, etc. Could it be that I also got into the reputation expec- tance rut the time before last at—Carl's? . . . Things then weren't up to par in my estimation . . . However, on a recent visit, excellent waitress Segrid Elward on the bar side, who has waited on me that last three times, was again the premier type of service Carl has insisted on all these years . . . (Carl's Chop House opened its doors in 1933) .. . And even the busboy, Saleh "Sal" Alammari, who has been at Carl's three Plan Your Next Affair At ing5tep 3inn • Bar Mitzvas • Bat Mitzvas • Sweet 16's • Banquets • Showers • Parties For All Occasions Excellent Facilities Available For Wedding Ceremony and Receptions Plus A 160-Room Hotel For Your Guests LUNCHEONS MON. OF LONG LAKE RD. Bloomfield Hills $ 95 per person Reservations Accepted 644-1400 years, on the bar side, is the kind of young man who waitresses, owners and cus- tomers enjoy having around . . . He is courteous, efficient and ever-present to take care of all needs that his job demands. As anybody knows who has ever eaten there, steaks and shops are the specialty at Carl's . . . which lays claim to selling more 4-H Club blue ribbon steaks and chops than any other restaurant in the country . . . I had one of the most beautiful and tasty pieces of prime rib a person could re- ceive. And therein lies a factor . . . When dining at Carl's it is well to remember that here is primarily a steak, chop and prime beef house . . . Although Carl Rosen- feld will take no back seat in the offering of his selective fish and seafood menu, meat is still very much king at Carl's Chop House. WHO SAYS 25 cents doesn't get you very much these days? . . . It really doesn't, but seems like yes- teryears have returned when people disbelievingly see they can go to a movie theater for a quarter . . . It's true.. . . 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. matinees, Saturdays and Sundays, at the Bloomfield Theater in Birmingham .. . great for the kids and a lot of grownups also. In the evenings, Monday through Thursday, it's just a dollar . . . and $1.50 on Friday and Saturday . . . for top-run movies. MARVIN KAHN, excel- lent alto clarinetist, will join superb pianist- songstress Kathy Landis on Tuesday, 7:30 til after 12 midnight, at Caucus Club on Congress. Kathy plays solo to the extreme satisfaction of a lot of people, Tuesday through Saturday . . . and having Marvin this Tuesday will be a big added plus. They'll also be together April 21 at the Chambertin in Dearborn. Marvin had his own or- chestra years back . . . known as the Tommy Mar- vin Band. THE ONCE FAMOUS Celebrity Comics Corner at Lindy's in New York, reigned over by the likes of Milton Berle, Jack E. Leonard, Red Skelton, Alan King, Ed Wynn and so many others, now has its every-morning counterpart here at Irving's at the back room's front table . . . Only these guys aren't profes- sional comics . . . However, with the likes of Iry Silk, Jerry Harris, Ed Marcus, Larry Brook and Hal Be- rman . . . plus "drifters" who come and sit at their table . . . there's always plenty of jokes to go with the bagels.
