of the Labor Zionist Al-
liance (LZA) has expressed
its "dcep disappointment"
that its sister organization
in Israel, the Israel Labor
Party, which voted in the
Knesset to transfer a func-
tion of the Ministry of Reli-
gion to the Chief Rabbinate:
the authorization of rabbis
to perform marriages.
The LZA resolution
criticizing the Israel Labor
Party's vote was incorpo-
rated in a letter to Shimon

Labor Party.

resolution, "to take into
more serious consideration
the views of Reform and

they shall at least have re-
course to the courts of Israel
rather than the Rabbinate
which excludes other
pluralistic forms of Jewish
expression."
Last December, in an ad-
dress to UAHC's biennial
convention in Toronto,
Peres read a statement
pledging that the Labor
Party would "work for legis-
lation to assure the recogni-
tion of all streams of reli-
pressure, or coercion to
interfere with personal or
individual ways of life."
