Jihan (named after her mother) went up to Daliyat El-Carmel, the Druze vil- lage on Mt. Carmel. There her host was Amal Nasser E-Din, one of the three Druze in the present Knes- set. E-Din was the first Druze to enter Israel's parliament as an ex-serviceman and the first non-Jewish member to mourn a son killed in action in Israel's wars. E-Din belongs, live in 18 vil- lages throughout Galilee and on Mt. Carmel. Known by his friends as "Abu Lutfi," E-Din is the fourth member of his community to sit in Is- rael's parliament. As a discharged sergeant from the Israeli army he returned after- the 1948 war to his native village of Daliyat El-Carmel. There, he was appalled by the neglect of the af- fairs of Druze war vete- rans, particularly in housing and rehabilita- tion. After arguing his case for years, the Histadrut finally agreed to open a special office for the care of Druze • (and Circassian) veterans. E-Din was put in charge and worked to ease the return to normal civilian life of his comrades in arms after years of combat service in the defense of their country. In 1966 E-Din was elected to head the first Druze Labor Council, serving the two neighboring villages of Daliya and Isfiya. Soon after his election, "Gibor Textiles" was able to open its industrial plant in the modernized village of Daliya. Today nobody doubts that if E-Din's native Daliya was Joe Slatkin's DEXTER CHEVROLET 45 Years Of Dependable Sales & Service For The Best Deals On New and Used Cars Stop In At Joe Slatkin's DEXTER CHEVROLET N• - EXCALIBUR Druze MK Is Truly a People's Politician 20811 W. 8 Mile between Southfield & Telegraph Rd. Adjoining the city of Southfield 534-1400 the first Druze village in which a modern • enterprise of this kind was opened, this was due to his standing in his local community, which alone was able to overcome the stiff opposition of village elders and religious sheikhs in this, Israel's most conser- vative minority. Only-when the practice had become established in Daliya did villagers in other Galilee locations give their consent to their daughters leaving their homes, learning a voca- tion and finding em- ployment in a modern factory. Today Daliya "Gibor" employs over one hundred Druze girls; one of them, Miss Emunah Nasser E-Din, was elected by them as chairperson of the work- ers committee in the El Al Security Measure Claimed LONDON (ZINS) — The British magazine, Flight, claimed in a recent article that El Al Israel Airlines passenger planes have been fitted with a heat-producing device that is hotter than the aircrafts' engines in order to thwart Russian- designed, heat-seeking mis- siles that are known to be in the hands of terrorists. The magazine speculated that the cost of the equip- ment and other security I measures may be the cause of El Al's recent operating losses. Bank Leumi Promotes Women TEL AVIV — The number of women in man- agerial positions at Bank Leumi Le-Israel, has risen from three to 10 percent during the past decade. While 55 percent of the bank's 13,000 employees are women, a 20 percent annual turnover rate limited advancement op- portunities among them. Those figures were dis- closed at a Women's Day Conference on "Women in the Economy of the 80s," at Tel Aviv University. plant. Fed up with the neglect of his community by the Labor party and Histadrut, E-Din drew his political conclu- sions in 1970 and resigned from both. He became-direc- tor of the Likud's minority department and in the be- ginning of 1977, upon the resignation of four Likud members in the Knesset, E-Din's turn arrived to enter Israel's parliament. Soon after this, the new MK opened his own office in downtown Haifa, the second ever Druze MK to run a "constituents office" of his own. There, three times weekly, he receives an av- erage of 150 callers. Most of them are from his own community, the rest made up of Moslems, Christians and Jews who seek his ad- vice and aid.
