The primary problems

the fate of the American

Navy Rescues Yacht Adrift
Under Fire Near Lebanon

TEL AVIV — A disabled
Israeli yacht with 11
passengers aboard was re-
scued by a navy patrol boat
as it wallowed in heavy seas
several hundred yards off
the Lebanese coast under
fire from terrorist shore bat-
teries last week.
The Marina, a sailing
vessel with auxiliary
engine, left Kishon anchor-
age on Haifa Bay early last
Monday on a pleasure trip
to Larnaca, Cyprus. Her
skipper, Israel Lauber, and
his passengers, who in-
cluded three women, are all
amateur sailors.
A clogged fuel line caused
the engine to fail when the
craft was two hours out to
sea. Sails were raised but a
gale developed and the
yacht made for land in the
vicinity of Rosh Hanikra on
the Israeli-Lebanese bor-
der. A sudden shift in the
i wind caused her to drift
[ N---- northward in the direction
of the terrorist stronghold
- — at Tyre.
Lauber called the Haifa
maritime station by radio
telephone for assistance.
The navy was informed
and a patrol boat of the
Daboor class rushed to
the scene. When it ar-
rived, the Marina was
drifting helplessly about
[
400 yards off shore and
under fire.
The naval craft opened
fire with its own gun while

attempts were made to get a
tow line aboard the yacht.
The Marina was pulled out
of danger and the two was
later transferred to a tug
sent north from Haifa.

India Recognizes
PLO Terrorists

LONDON (JTA) — The
government of India last
week became the first gov-
ernment to extend full dip-
lomatic recognition to the
Palestine Liberation
Organization.
PLO chief Yasir Arafat
was in New Delhi for a
two-day visit at the invita-
tion of Prime Minister In-
dira Ghandi.
At the same time, the Ita-
lian government has made
several statements in sup-
port of "a solution of the
Palestinian problem."
Although the statement
reaffirmed Israel's rights to
secure borders, it also spoke
of Italy's recognition of the
PLO as the representative
of the Palestinian people.
In Vienna, Arafat was
quoted in a newspaper
interview as saying that he
has no intention of destroy-
ing anything, presumably
including Israel. But the
PLO's No. 2 man, Salai
Khalaf, speaking in Abu
Dhabi, called for a military
alliance of the Arab states
and Palestinians to confront
Israel.
