8,000 Trees Ordered for Israel
at Bnai Brith Brunch for JNF

More than 8,000 trees
were ordered to be planted
in the Bnai Brith "Forest of
Peace" formally established
Sunday at the metropolitan
Detroit Bnai Brith
Presidents Brunch at Adat
Shalom Synagogue. The
"Forest of Peace" is an ex-
tension of the Bnai Brith
Martyr's Forest, now com-
pleted, in the Galilee.
Co-sponsored by Bnai
Brith and the Jewish Na-
tional Fund, the brunch
hosted more than 500 who
heard Daniel Mann, direc-
tor, Bnai Brith Interna-
tional Israel Commission,
guest speaker.
Carmi M. Slomovitz,
president, Detroit JNF, pre-
sented a citation to Einstein
Lodge and Chapter, cited for
their efforts on behalf of
"the growth and develop-
ment of Israel," having now
completed their own forest
of 10,000 trees — "the Bnai
Brith Lodge and Chapter
Albert Einstein Forest" in
the Bnai Brith Martyrs'
Forest.'
The citation was
awarded to Einstein
Lodge President Sam
Friedman and chapter
President Sally Bieder-
man. An inscription will
be entered in the JNF
Golden Book in Israel.
Einstein is the first Lodge
to plant an entire forest.

Fund, presenting a special citation to Sally Bieder-
man, president of the Einstein Chapter, and Sam
Friedman, president of the lodge, inscribing the lodge
and chapter in the JNF Golden Book in Jerusalem.
In the middle photo, Linda Moss, left, past
president of the Bnai Brith Women's Council, pre-
sents a certificate attesting to the planting of a garden
of trees in Israel in honor of Sylvia Ross, right, current
Council president.
In bottom photograph, George Tarnoff, left, pre-
sents a garden certificate to Floyd Bornstein,
president of Bnai Brith Men's Council. Ms. Moss and
Tarnoff were co-chairmen of the brunch.

Louis Kay of Einstein
Lodge was -lauded several
times during the session for
selling more than 6,000
trees, singlehandedly, dur-
ing the past two years.
Guest speaker Mann
talked about Bnai Brith's
involvement in the
achievement of Jews in Is-
rael for more than 100
years.
"Ninety-nine years ago,
in Poland, Russia and
Romania, there was one
pogrom too many, and then
began that great migration.
More than 100,000 Jews a
year came to these shores.
The First Aliya created the
first Jewish community in
Israel, and to this ; there is a
Bnai Brith connection.
"The first Bnai Brith
lodge in Jerusalem was
established in the 1880s
by Eliezer Ben-Yehudah,
and Bnai Brith vowed
then, as now, that the et-
ernal destiny of Israel
will not be denied."
Highlighting the brunch
was the presentation of cer-
tificates for the planting of
gardens of 100 trees each,
honoring Floyd Bornstein,
president of the men's coun-
cil; and Sylvia Ross,
president of the women's
council. The latter is the
first women's president to
have a garden planted in
her honor in the new forest
of peace, according to Linda
Moss, brunch co-chairman.
The event also commemo-
rated the first anniversary
of the signing of the

Israeli-Egyptian peape_
treaty.
Percy Kaplan, executive
director of JNF, expressed
appreciation to Bnai Brith
by presenting special
awards to the members of
the brunch committee for
their efforts."
