Anti-Semitic Act at German
Institution Focus of Trial
Dr. Albert Schweitzer Letters
Donated to Tel Aviv University
BONN (JTA) — A gross
anti-Semitic incident at the
Munich military college
three years ago is the sub-
ject of a trial that opened
there last week of two senior
officers on the college staff.
Col. Edgar Muenx, 47,
and Maj. Hans-Joachim
Stabenau, 40, are accused of
failure to report the inci-
dent in February 1977 in
which a group of cadets
burned a "Jew" in effigy,
sang Nazi songs and
shouted "Throw another
Jew on the fire."
The incident was char-
acterized as the worst man-
ifestation of anti-Semitism
TEL AVIV (JTA) — More
than 100 original letters by
the late Nobel Peace Prize
winner, Dr. Albert
Schweitzer, were donated to
the TeI Aviv University
here by Mrs. Clara Ur-
quhart of London.
Urquhart was a close
friend of Schweitzer as well
as his assistant. the let-

Jerusalem Day
Unity Is Urged
Your Family .. .
Friday, March 28, 1980 55
NEW YORK — Leon
Dulzin, chairman of the
Jewish Agency and the
World Zionist Organization
Executives, appealed for "a
mammoth outpouring of
both Jews and all non-
Jewish friends of Jerusalem
and Israel on Jerusalem
Day, May 14, to mark it in-
delibly before the world as a
monumental event that will
dramatically express the
eternal love, fealty and re-
verence for our sacred city
and capital that is so per-
sonally and passionately
heartfelt by all Jews
everywhere."
Dulzin spoke to separate
meetings of the American
Zionist Federation's leaders
of major Zionist organiza-
tions chaired by Rabbi
Joseph Sternstein, and the
Executive of the World
Zionist Organization-
American Section, chaired
by Mrs. Charlotte Jacobson,
just before returning to Is-
rael.
"In such a critical time
involving Israel's fate it is
an essential that we fulfill
our leadership responsibil-
ity to close ranks in an ex-
hibition of Jewish unity in
our public appearances
whatever our private dif-
ferences are," he stressed. _
"It is therefore impera-
tive that we stand as one in
support of Israel's national
points of concern and forego
pointing out those areas of
which we are critical. We
must for the present time of
peril stress what unites us
and store on the shelf for the
time being, those that di-
vide. Otherwise we shall
give arms to our enemies to
inflict wounds upon us."
Egypt Expanding
Oil Production
TEL AVIV (ZINS) — Is-
raeli experts believe that
Egypt will be able to expand
Sinai oil production by 1982
to two million barrels daily,
putting Egypt in a class
with neighboring Libya as a
major world oil producer.
The Egyptian weekly
newspaper Al Siyassi re-
ported this week that Egypt
has also discovered huge oil
reserves in its western des-
ert that could transform her
into one of the world's
largest oil exporters.
in the German armed
forces. Eleven cadets who
participated were sus-
pended.
A number of them have
since appealed the deci-
sion on grounds that the
military authorities had
acted under the pressure
of adverse publicity at
home and abroad.
The defendants could re-
ceive prison sentences of up
to three years if found guilty
of failure to report a crimi-
nal act. During the last two
years, serious anti-Semitic
incidents were reported at a
military college in Ham-
burg.
Meanwhile, the federal
agency in Dortmund deal-
ing with the prosecution of
Nazi war criminals dis-
closed that about 20 pro-
ceedings are currently
pending against persons
suspected of mass, crimes
during the Nazi era.
