Passover for Russian Emigres:
Four Sons Arrive at Airport

NEW YORK — In recent ugees arriving at Kennedy
years it has been a BIAS Airport during the week be-
fore Passover.
- What strikes the on-
looker, and of course those
of us who are involved
throughout the year on an
almost daily basis in wel-
coming these refugees, is
not only the sincerity and

dedication of the bene-

factors but also the diver-

sity of the reactions to these
gifts by the new arrivals.
The Haggada tells of four
different sons. We too found
four different "sons" at the
airport.
There was, to begin with,
the one who did not want to
touch the objects. It was a
conditioned reflex. He had
grown up' in a social order'
where the mere possession
of Judaica or Jewish objects
was ample ground for crim-
inal prosecution and even
exile.
Then there was the one
who smilingly recognized
the object through its
transparent wrapping,
handled it for a moment

According to some
authorities two whole mat-
zot are required in order to
pronounce the benediction
over the bread (i.e., matza)
on any holiday. Since one of
the matzot have to be
broken so that a part of it
can be put away for the
afikoman to be eaten after
the meal this would leave
only 1 1/2 matzot for the
benediction. Therefore, a
third matza is added.
Even according to those
authorities who claim that
it is only on the Sabbath
that two whole matzot are
required for the benediction
a third matza is required for
every Seder meal because
sometimes the eve of the
Passover occurs on Friday
evening and if one leas used
to placing only two matzot
on the table on Passover eve
he might easily forget to
place a third matza when
the Passover eve Seder falls
on a–Friday night. Thus
every Passover eve requires
the third matza.

TEL AVIV (JTA). — A
state of alert was instituted
in Upper Galilee after two
salvos of Katyusha rockets
were fired into the region
last Friday from uniden-
tified sources inside the
Lebanese border. There
were no casualties but
slight damage was reported
at one Israeli border settle-
ment. Israeli forces did not
return the fire.
The first salvo hit at mid-
day and the second shortly
before dusk. They followed a
heavy exchange of artillery
fire between Arab terrorists
and the Christian militia in
south Lebanon.
According to accounts,
the Christians shelled the
coastal town of Sidon caus-
ing some damage. The ter-
rorists opened fire on the
Christian enclave, killing
one villager. The militia re-
taliated by shelling the ter;
rorist bases at Nabatiyeh,•
Rashadiyeh and the
Beaufort Castle.
The exchange ended last
night when, at the request
of the Lebanese govern-
ment, American officials in-
tervened with the Arabs
and Israel used its good
offices with Maj. Saad Had-
dad, commander of the
militia.

and then attempted to di-
vest himself of it by pass-
ing it to a nearby coun-
tryman or returning it to
the donor. This person
exemplifies the end result
of decades of cultural de-
privation &nd religious
intolerance.
The third type accepted
the offering with a smile
and a "spasibo" and exam-
ined it carefully as one
would a newly acquired
household appliance. It was
to him a clear indicator that
he had come to a different
kind of world, where he was
free to worship or not, to
serve or not, to lead a
Jewish life or not.
The most touching reac-
tion of all took the form of an
emotional outburst as the
sight of the matzot conjured
up memories of parents and
grandparents who had
somehow managed to lead
genuinely Jewish lives, be-
hind drawn shades, despite
harassment and jeopardy.
How pleasant it was years
ago when the calm of a Sab-
bath or festival descended
upon the household and
community!
Throughout the year
these four types pass
through Immigration and
Customs under our watch-
ful eye and with our help
and are sent off to the com-
munities that will look after
them. Last year there were
more than 25,000. We can-
not assign them to
categories as we are able to
do Erev Passover. Only with
matzot is that possible. Yet
we know that all four types
keep coming through those
electronically operated
doors to freedom.
