Rabbi's Discovery Cause for Warning
to Protect Silver Religious Articles

An urgent warning is
being issued to area
synagogues and temples to
protect their ceremonial
and religious items from
theft now that the price of
silver is up.
The warning was issued
by Rabbi Jack Goldman,
who discovered a Torah
pointer (yad) being offered
for sale at a Lathrup Village
coin dealer's shop.
He queried the dealer
about where he got the
Torah pointer, and was told
that a young boy brought it
in. The dealer told Rabbi
Goldman that he was sus-
picious when the boy
brought it to his shop.
Rabbi Goldman said he
thought the Torah
pointer might have be-
longed to Young Israel of
Southfield whose build-
ing was broken into re-
cently.
He was told that it did not
belong to that congregation,
but that a Torah crown was
stolen. The congregation's
spokesman said that when
the Torah crown was found,
it was being broken up into
pieces to make rings.
Meanwhile,
Rabbi
Goldman contacted Detec-
tive Andrew Misner of the
Lathrup police who got in
touch with the family of the
boy who turned in the Torah

It is forbidden to drink
anything except water after
having drunk the fourth cup
of wine at the Seder.
One explanation given for
this prohibition is that in
observing religious re-
quirements generally one
should not add any excess to
the practice.
A second source claims
that it is prohibited so that
one should not lose the taste
of the matzot (according to
this explanation even water
should not be consumed).
A third explanation
claims that the reason for
the prohibition is that any

Schneerson.
The rebbe addressed a
gathering of 10,000 in
Brooklyn last night, which
was heard locally at the
Lubavitcher Center in Oak
Park.
A reception was held
Thursday afternoon at the
Senate Office Building in
Washington, D.C. at which
an honor scroll was signed
to be presented to the rebbe.

showed that few had suf-
fered any theft of religious
articles since the rise in the
price of silver. However,
Temple Beth El said it was
missing three Torah poin-
ters, all inscribed with the
names of the donors, and
two Torah crowns.)
He surmised that they
may have been stolen in
New York and made their
way to Detroit.
He said of the four
Yad'aim, some have chains,
others do not. A probe is
underway to find the source
