NEW YORK — Esther
Shitrit, a high school stu-
dent at American Mizrachi
Women's Mosad Aliya
Youth Village in Petah
Tikva, recently won first
prize in the annual science
contest for the best research
project conducted by an Is-
raeli high school student.
Her discovery of a way to
identify latent infections in
mangoes before the fruit is
picked will help Israel's
growers forecast the per-
centage of infected fruit
that will appear in cold
storage and enable them to
prevent damage to the
healthy fruit.

TAU Developing Cancer Agent

TEL AVIV — Tel Aviv
University scientists have
established the effective-
ness of a substance called
Levan for healing or in-
hibiting the development of
cancer in laboratory ani-
mals.
Dr. Judith Leibovici and
Prof. Moshe Wolman,
chairman of the Depart-
ment of Pathology, have
found Levan to have a com-
bination of properties which
function both as an im-
munotherapeutic agent
stimulating the immune
system to combat the can-
cerous growth, and as a
chemotherapeutic agent di-
rectly affecting tumor cells.
In combination with con-
ventional chemotherapy,
Levan has proven effective
in healing cancer in more
than 80 percent of the lab-
oratory animals tested.
Conventional surgery and
radiation treatment elimi-
nate local cancerous masses
without healing the cancer
or preventing cancerous
spreading, and today's
chemotherapy also dam-
ages healthy cells and can
often be as detrimental to
the patient as the cancer it-
self.
The unique properties
of Levan, combining
immune-stimulating ac-
tion with cytotoxicity,
apparently without
damaging healthy cells,
may be an answer to the
shortcomings of today's
cancer treatment.
Levan is a natural sub-
stance extracted from bac-
teria fungi and plants. It is a
high molecular weight
polysaccharide which func-
tions by coating the blood

Biased Clubs
Fee Ban Asked

NEW YORK — The
American Jewish Commit-
tee has called upon the U.S.
government to adopt "an
absolute ban" on the pay-
ment of membership dues to
exclusionary private clubs
by government contractors.
In a letter to the Office of
Federal Contract. Com-
pliance Programs of the
U.S. Labor Department, the
human relations agency re-
peated its long-standing
contention that private
clubs that exclude members
on the basis of race, sex,
religion, or national origin
are "perhaps the most seri-
ous socially acceptable ves-
tige of bigotry in our na-
tion."

`Rosalynn Rose'
at Haifa Exhibit

HAIFA — A presentation
of the new "Rosalynn Rose"
by the White House will be a
feature of "Floris 80," the
23rd international flower
show taking place in Haifa
through April 8. The new
floral specimen, honoring
American President Jimmy
Carter's wife, will make its
premier appearance over-
seas at the Haifa show,
among the floral specialties
of Israel and 18 other na-

vessel walls and preventing
the transfer of materials to
the tissues.
Preliminary experiments
of the Tel Aviv University
team of the Sackler School
of Medicine indicate that
Levan is also effective in de-
laying the rejection of
transplants and in treating
other diseases in which the
stimulation of immune ac-
tivity and the prevention of
damaging antibody transfer
to tissues are important fac-
tors.
The Tel Aviv University
team cautions that the find-
ings thus far only reflect the
effectiveness of Levan in
treating animal tumors.
Within the framework of a
cooperation agreement be-

tween Tel Aviv University
and Rene Descartes Uni-
versity in Paris, France,
Levan will now be tested on
humans in France,in coor-
dination with the Tel Aviv
University team.
