Jewish Vote Not a Myth: Kennedy Beats Carter in N.Y. Protest

President Jimmy Carter
heard the loudest criticisms
of all, in the echo that came
from New York Tuesday
night.
This was one time, an
analyst commented, when
Jews in the Empire State
didn't mind being charged
with voting in a spirit
charged with Jewish par-
tiality.
In New York, Jews also
said they were teaching the
White House a lesson on the
agonies of inflation — as a
bonus to the protest against

Ronald Reagan similarly
has strong Jewish backing.
He is supported by Jacques

41 percent, as well as his
equally surprising victory
in Connecticut, to voter un-
happiness with inflation.
The voter turnout in the
Democratic primary among
Jews, as among all other
New Yorkers, was light.
But Jews, who traditionally
make up 33-40 percent of
primary voters in New York
went 79 percent for Ken-
nedy statewide and 82 per-
cent in New York City.
Robert Strauss, Car-

in conceding defeat fairly
early, blamed it on the
President's announced
budget cuts and "a bad
UN resolution which hurt
us here." Strauss was re-
ferring to the U.S. vote

Israel's settlement

pudiated two days later.
At the White House
Tuesday night, Presidential
press secretary Jody Powell
also conceded the UN vote
as well as the economy hurt
Carter in New York. He also
said that many people who
supported Carter did • not
vote Tuesday. Observers be-
lieve that many Democrats-

Veil Would Bar Yasir Arafat
From Parliament of Europe

BONN (JTA) — Simone
Veil, president of the Parli-
ament of Europe, indicated
here that the body over
which she presides would
not invite Yasir Arafat,
leader of the Palestine Lib-
eration Organization which
is being courted by several
European governments, to

press conference Saturday,
she noted that the European
Parliament maintains con-
tacts only with other parli-
aments.
Veil also observed that
the nine member states of
the European Economic
Community (EEC) cannot
be prevented by the Euro-
pean Parliament from
launching their planned
Middle East initiative.
However, she said, the Par-
liament can express its
opinion on the matter. She
did not suggest what that
opinion might be.
Britain, France and
West Germany are seek-
ing EEC support to
amend Security Council
Resolution 242 to refer to
the Palestinians as a
political entity rather
than a refugee problem.

process were politically
costly," the White House
spokesman said.
He added, "Quite frankly,
there will be other decisions
in the anti-inflation fight
and in the attempts to keep
the Camp David peace proc-
ess alive that may be politi-
cally difficult. The
President is prepared to
make those decisions and
accept the consequences,"
he said.
Both Kennedy and Carter
are now looking ahead to
the next primaries, espe-
cially Wisconsin next 'rues
day and Pennsylvania Apri
22 where there are large
Jewish populations.
Although most experts
are crediting Kennedy's
New York victory to the
Jewish vote, many point
out that Jews are follow-
ing the trend of other
Democrats. In the
Massachusetts primary,
which came three days
after the UNVote and the
day after Carter re-
pudiated it, Jews gave.
Carter 80 percent of their
vote in Kennedy's home
state.
In Florida, two weeks ago,
where Carter won, the
Jewish vote was 53 percent
in favor of Kennedy. But
last week in Illinois, where
Kennedy was defeated and
his campaign believed
finished, Jews joined the
general trend in voting 2-1
for Carter.
