Director General Tells of Needs to Detroiters David Altman, who last month was named director-general of Bar-Ilan University, Ramat-Gan, Is- rael, addressing members of the executive committee of Detroit Friends of Bar-Ilan, at a luncheon meeting Wednesday at the Sheraton-Southfield, de- scribed the progress achieved and stated that the severest need at present is the cramped space for classes and dormitories. Altman told of numerous projects that have been in- troduced, the three extra- curricular campuses, classes for the military and special courses for the el- derly. "We are a university with a mission," he said. "Our aim is to bring the tradi- tional message to our people, to make Judaism alive, knowledgeable, un- derstood and adhered to." In a brief introductory address, Dr. Leon Fill, a member of the Bar-Ilan University board of di- rectors, added to the call for action by outlining the objectives aimed at providing fullest univer- sity facilities for the 10,000 students, the hun- dreds from abroad, the more than 100 Arabs enrolled in the student body. co- Klein, Emory chairman of fund-raising with Robert Naftaly, who presided at the luncheon, asked for widest support in the oncoming fund-raising projects for the university. Altman has been associ- ated with Bar-Ilan since 1969 as a student or member of the administra- tion. Born in Jerusalem in 1941, he had administrative experience with the Tel Aviv District Court and as president of the court work- ers' union. He was elected president of the Bar-Ilan Student Association in 1972 and of the Israel National Student Union in 1973. Altman was named special assistant to Bar-Ilan's director general in 1974, deputy director general in 1975 and was named director general of Former Detroiter Founding Male Breast Cancer Unit A former Detroiter now living in El Paso, Texas has formed a foundation to dis- seminate information about male breast cancer. Lawrence Keats, a De- troit optometrist who re- tired to El Paso in 1971 and had a breast cancer opera- tion, is warning men to be wary of lumps in the breast area. Keats has queried the American Cancer Society about its lack of publicity about male breast cancer. He was told that the inci- dence of this type of cancer was too small for an infor- mation campaign on the subject. Keats says that in the U.S. there are 3.1 cases for each one million males. In Israel, there are 7.8 cases per million. In the U.S., Keats says, there are 600-700 cases nation- ally, compared to 90,000 cases of breast cancer in women. Keats says breast cancer in males can frequently travel more rapidly than for the female, and therefore a radical mastectomy is most often performed. Keats urges rehabilitation pro- grams to make it possible to move the arm fully and completely after such oper- ations. He has written a book which he hopes soon to have published, "Single- Breasted Living." Keats is eager for men to understand that men do come down with breast cancer and they should not ignore a little lump anywhere on the body, but particularly in the breast area. "I am trying to establish an association of survivors throughout the country," he explained. "We want to train some of them to speak in their areas of the country, to spread information about this disease." Survivors of male mastec- tomies are asked to write Lawrence Keats, 14799 Chazy Ct., El Paso, Tex. 79927. Business Briefs o' the university last month. As such, he is the chief ad- ministrator for the school's 10,000 students and five campuses.
