University President Advises \ ASK ABOUT OUR DAILY SPECIALS

NEW YORK — Dr.
Samuel DuBois Cook,
president of Dillard Univer-
sity, has called on blacks
and Jews to re-establish the
"great alliance" of the civil
rights movement.
Speaking at a program in
New Orleans in observance
of Dr. Martin Luther King's
birthday, Dr. Cook de-
clared: "Blacks alone sim-
ply cannot change their own
status. They must receive
help — and a lot of it — from
outside the black commu-
nity."

NEW YORK — Joseph
Handleman, national
president of American Red
Magen David for Israel
(ARMDI) will be honored at
the 1980 ARMDI annual
luncheon on April 17, the
Sheraton Center in New
York.
Handleman, a former De-
troiter now living in
Florida, will be presented
with the ARMDI Interna-
tional Humanitarian
Award "for his dynamic
leadership, vision and guid-
ance which has helped
ARMDI emerge in recent
years as a strong, effective
organization of national
stature, with more than 100
Chapters throughout the
country active in support of
Magen David Adom, Is-
rael's Red Cross Service."
Handleman will receive
his presentation from
George M. Elsey, president
of the American Red Cross.

Time of Death
Orthodox Issue

Dr. Cook continued: "In
particular, we must move
with swiftness, vigor, in-
telligence, determination,
understanding and wisdom
to strengthen and make
whole again black-Jewish
relations. During the civil
rights movement, no ally
was more supportive and
committed than the Jews.
"Whatever differences
there may be in policy,
strategy and method pale
into insignificance in
comparison with what
united blacks and Jews
— the strong and deep
historical, moral,
spiritual, religious, emo-
tional and psychological
ties that bind the two
groups ...
"If any two groups in this
tragic and complex world
should and must be natural,
inseparable and permanent
friends and allies, they are
Jews and blacks. A long and
endless history of suffering
is the source and inspiration
of unity and solidarity,
understanding and sym-
pathy, sensitivity and em-
pathy. Both, for centuries,
have been victims of oppres-
sion, persecution, de-
humanization and unend-
ing tragedy.
"Between Jews and
blacks, there is a deep and
enduring community."

NEW YORK — A bill
currently being debated in
the New York state legisla-
ture which would define
time of death in a manner
which contravenes Jewish
law (Halakha) was termed a
"violation of religious
rights" by the Commission
on Legislation and Civic Ac-
tion of Agudath Israel of
America.
In a memorandum to the
state Assembly, Rabbi
Menachem Lubinsky, direc-
tor of government and pub-
lic affairs of Agudath Israel,
said: "Agudath Israel has
been fighting this concept in
New York state's legisla-
ture for years, because
