Star Trek's Walter Koenig Promotes Book About Movie

Walter Koenig, alias Lt.
Chekov in the Star Trek
television series and the
1979 motion picture, was in
Detroit this week to pro-
mote his new book, "A Per-
sonal Journal of the Making
of Star Trek — the Motion
Picture" (Simon and Schus-
ter Pocket Books).
Koenig is one of three

nal Star Trek TV series —
the others being the series'
stars, William Shatner
(Capt. Kirk) and Leonard
Nimoy (Dr. Spock).
Koenig, son of Lithua-
nian Jewish parents, was
born in Chicago and
attended college in Iowa
and at UCLA.
It was at UCLA that
Koenig turned to an act-
ing career after giving up
on the idea of being a
psychiatrist or psychol-
ogist. Since the Star Trek
series, however, his
interest in psychology

Israel Flowers
Set for Shavuot

MIAMI

NEW YORK — Israf-
lower, a program which
provides fresh Israeli-
grown flowers for U.S.
organizations to sell at a
profit, has scheduled the
first Shavuot delivery in its
three-year history.
According to David Pick,
national director of Israf-
lower, the increase in de-
mand from participating
organizations for Israeli-
grown flowers has per-
suaded the Israel exporters
to add a special delivery on
May 15 for the Shavuot
holiday (May 20-22).
Pick reported that more
than 500 Jewish organiza-
tions in communities
around the country ordered.

for the Passover holiday.
He attributed the suc-
cess of the Israflower
program to the fact that
Israflower helps the Is-
raeli export industry,
serves as a fund-raiser
for participating organ-
izations and provides de-
corative flowers for local
consumers.
The flowers themselves
are unique products, spe-
cially grown in Israel for
export with unusually long
life and stamina. Each
flower has its own multi-
color combination and is
unique in the American
flower market.

Guest Artists to Appear
in Detroit Symphony Concerts

A variety of guest artists
will appear with the Detroit
Symphony Orchestra in its
forthcoming concerts.
At 8:30 p.m. today and
Saturday, Matthias Bamert
will conduct the DSO in
concerts at Ford Au-
ditorium. Pianist Radu
Lapu will be the guest
pianist.
The Kresge Family con-
cert at Ford Auditorium at
3:30 p.m. Sunday will fea-
ture guitarists Angel and
Pepe Romero. The orchestra
will be conducted by DSO
assistant conductor Ken-
neth Jean.
A highlight of the De-
troit Symphony Or-
chestra season will be its
international Brahms
festival to be celebrated
April 10-26.
Conducted by music di-
rector Antal Dorati the fes-
tival will feature 64 guest

The festival will include
almost all of Brahms' orch-
estral repertory including
all four symphonies, all four
concertos, 18 chamber
works, and samples of
keyboard music, choral
music and sorgs.
Concerts will be held at
locations throughout the
metropolitan area. Among
the guests artists are Vla-
dimir Ashkenazy, Isaac
Stern and Mischa Kottler.

The Detroit Symphony
Civic Orchestra will per-
form at Orchestra Hall at 8
p.m. Monday DSO Conduc-
tor Fellow Michael
Krajewski will conduct the
first part of the program in
which the women of the
Oakland University Chorus
will participate. The DSO's
principal trombonist,
Raymond Turner, will di-
rect the last two works on
the program.
