Class on Holidays
Draws Criticism

NEW YORK — The
American Jewish Congress
has assailed the "insensitiv-
ity" of the Equal Employ-
ment Opportunity Commis-
sion (EEOC) in scheduling a
compulsory two-week train-
ing course in Washington
for employees from around
the country during a period
which includes Passover,
Palm Sunday and Good Fri-
day.
The training session is
scheduled to run from
March 24 to April 4.
altkPassover begins at sundown
al March 31. Palm Sunday
is March 30. Good Friday is
April 4. All employees
attending the course are ex-
pected to remain in Wash-
ington for the entire period.
The American Jewish
Congress voiced its corn-
plaint in a letter to Eleanor
Holmes Norton, who chairs,
the EEOC, the government
agency responsible for pro-
tecting employees from dis-
crimination on the job.

Berman Elected -
Knesset Speaker

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
Yitzhak Berman, a member
of the Liberal Party, was
elected unopposed as
speaker of the Knesset, the
post that was held by new
Foreign Minister Yitzlitik
Shamir. •
Berman received 64 votes
from the Likud coalition
• plus Shai, Sheli, Indepen-
dent Liberals, Civil Rights
Party and the Poalei Aguda.

abstained, Labor had
sought a secret ballot but
the Knesset committee
ruled that request out of or-
der.
Berman is a longtime
Liberal activist in Tel Aviv
and highly succewful com-
mercial lawyer. (He must
now give up his law prac-
tice.)
He is a political "dove" in
Likud terms. He was quoted 41k
as believing, for instance,
that settlements should
only be erected for urgent
and legitimate security rea-
sons.

Mayor Shlomo Lahat of Tel
Aviv had a prominent part
in New York's St. Patrick's
Day activities Monday.
Lahat, whose week-long
javisit here is under the au-
spices of the United Jewish
Appeal-Federation of
Jewish Philanthropies
Joint Campaign of New
York, was a guest on the re-
viewing stand at the St.
Patrick's Day Parade.
Earlier in the day he was
inducted into the "Loyal
Yiddish Sons of Erin" dur-
ing a pre-parade gathering
at the "New York Experi-
ence" Theater in Rockefel-
ler Center.
Monday evening, Lahat
joined Mayor Edward Koch
at a dinner in the Pierre
Hotel formally launching
Project Renewal.
