tice by Dr. Stephen S.
Wise, the eminent rabbi
and world Jewish leader,
and Dr. John Haynes
Holmes, the Unitarian
minister who labored
with him for great causes.
Dr. Voss' book has just
been reissued in paperback
by Prometheus Books, Buf-
falo.
A foreword to the re-
printed paperback pays
honor to the author by stat-
ing: "Dr. Voss has given us
new light on the mood and
the method of the social
gospel, of which both men
were gifted exponents." The
preface appears over the
names of Dr. Alfred
Gottschalk, president, He-
brew Union College-Jewish
Institute of Religion; Ed-
ward E. Klein, rabbi,

spiritual giants.
"Rabbi and Minister" is a
volume that points to the
two leaders' support of the
Zionist cause, their battles
for social justice, their
interest in clean politics. It
is a noteworthy book, with a
previous large circulation,
that retains its wide appeal
for people of all faiths.

The Bahais: Non-Muslim
Group Persecuted in Iran

The Bahais, Iran's largest
religious minority, are the
only major non-Muslim
group not recognized or pro-
tected by Iran's new Islamic
constitution. This has lead
to persecution of the coun-
try's Bahai community
which numbers some
450,000, according to a
story in Newsweek.
Since the advent of
Ayatollah Khomeini, all
Bahai schools and welfare
centers have been taken
over. Several Bahai owned
companies have been ex-
propriated and some 1,000
Bahais have been driven
from their homes. ,
The Bahais believe in
progressive revelations
from God, have their own
religious calendar, pray at
certain times each day and
meet in temples that re-
semble mosques. They also
make pilgrimages — not to
Mecca, but to the Bahai holy
places in Israel such as the
city of Acre and Mount
Carmel.
Because they also send
money to the Bahais in
Israel to help build a
world headquarters in
Haifa, Iran's militant
Muslims have charged
the Bahais with being
secret agents for Israel.
Several weeks ago a
member of a prominent
Bahai family was
charged in court with
being a Zionist simply
because of his religion.

The Bahais in America,
who claim 100,000 follow-
ers, believe there is nothing
they can do to support their
brethren. Although
thousands of Bahais are
emigrating from Iran,
others are renouncing their
faith.
The worst fear of all, say
many Bahai officials, is that
publicity about their plight
will only intensify the per-
secution.
